Black And Latina HS Soccer Players Upset By Offensive 'Trump' Chants

Investigation reveals surprising source of the taunts.

An investigation at a Wisconsin high school where students chanted "Trump, build that wall" at Black and Latina soccer players revealed that three 10-year-old girls were behind the taunt. In addition, fans from the high school student section yelled "Trump, Trump Trump" during the match, according to the findings.

The incident, which occurred Thursday in a girls soccer match between host Elkhorn Area High School and Beloit Memorial High School, received national coverage. Beloit Memorial coach Brian Denu told News 3 that some of his players were so upset by comments from the Elkhorn stands that they had to leave the field.

"One of the girls was cradled in the arms of one of our assistant coaches for a good 15 to 20 minutes," Denu told the station. ... "Seeing the impact on those kids is something I'll never forget as a coach."

On Monday Jason Tadlock, superintendent of the Elkhorn Area School District, told the Huffington Post that a district investigation indicated that the "build that wall" chant -- referring to Trump's plans to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border -- came from elementary school students, not high school students, as reported earlier. However, two fans in the high school student section did yell "Trump" four or five times in succession later in the game, he said.

"Obviously, any time a team comes to our school ... we all want them to feel welcome and have a positive experience," he said to HuffPost. "It was definitely inappropriate and insensitive and not representative of our expectations as a school."

In a statement later emailed to HuffPost after a phone interview, Tadlock added: "We apologize to the Beloit players, fans, and community that were hurt and offended by the comments and words of a few of our students."
