The word "seder" in Hebrew means "order," which is apt for the highly structured ritual dinner observed during Passover. But that doesn't mean it needs to be daunting, and it certainly doesn't mean it can't be fun.
The Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, a Jewish youth outreach organization, produced a playful guide to the Passover Seder in the spirit of an in-flight safety video. So fasten your seat belt, and get ready for the ride.
"We wanted to create a resource that would be fun, accessible and informative for all who are celebrating and sharing the holiday with others," Roben Smolar, the foundation's director of communications, told The Huffington Post.
"It has the in-flight safety video theme and pop culture references everyone can relate to, and at the same time, you can learn more about Passover and the traditions involved in creating a Seder," she added.
For those who didn't know, this weekend marks the beginning of Passover, an 8-day holiday that celebrates the Jewish people's deliverance from slavery in Egypt as told in the Book of Exodus.
During the Seder, Jews read from the Haggadah, a short book that contains explanations of the different foods on the seder plate, the Exodus story, songs, prayers and topics for discussion. There are countless versions of the Haggadah to appeal to different families and communities, ranging from the more traditional to some that are quite alternative.
As the video mentions, there are some restrictions (observant Jews eat only unleavened bread during Passover, for instance) and a special order for each reading and dish throughout the meal.
