These nonagenarians went on a date and it was old school cool.
Miriam Steiner, 93, and Harold Sharlin, 90, went on a blind date this past Sunday at Politics & Prose, a bookstore in D.C. The sight of their date was so heartwarming that staff at the bookstore documented the encounter with a photo and shared it on Facebook.
Lena Little, director of marketing and publicity at the bookstore, told The Huffington Post that the couple's date can teach us all a thing or two about forging new relationships.
"It's certainly speaks to the fact that it's never too late for a new connection, friendship and love," she said.
According to Today.com, the date was arranged by Sharlin's granddaughter who had waited on Steiner at a restaurant where she was dining. Steiner's husband died in 1999 and she hasn't dated since. When Steiner's granddaughter met Sharlin, she decided her upbeat personality would make her a potential match for her grandfather. Sharlin, who had lost his wife in 1998, called the widow to make plans for their special day.
While the staff at the bookstore were pleasantly surprised when Steiner checked in at the information desk and learned that she was meeting someone for their blind date, they respected the pair's privacy.
"That caught their attention immediately, needless to say," Little told HuffPost of the staff's reaction to the date. "The staff didn't hover or interfere with the date, of course, but Harold and Miriam cheerfully stopped by the information desk in good spirits before leaving."
The pair ended up spending the whole afternoon together. And though they aren't sure of their future as a couple, the date was definitely not time wasted.
"It's not easy, making connections as a senior," Steiner told Today.com. "But we need it. It's up there with Medicare and Social Security. I hope people remember that."
Little explained to HuffPost that after news got out of the pair's date, the bookstore was surprised with some pretty incredible stories.
"That has been yet another WONDERFUL and unexpected thing to come from our meeting Harold and Miriam: people have been sharing their own stories of meeting and falling in love at Politics & Prose and we couldn't be happier."
CORRECTION: A previous version of this article misidentified the waitress as Steiner's granddaughter. In fact, she is Sharlin's granddaughter.
