Delaware Student Dies After Fight In High School Bathroom

A 16-year-old girl died Thursday as a result of injuries she received during a fight with other students in a Delaware high school bathroom.

Friends and family identified Amy Joyner as the sophomore killed at Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington, Delaware. The fight began as classes were starting, according to a school district statement.

Law enforcement is still investigating the incident and did not disclose much about the altercation, except that two other girls were involved. The unnamed students were taken for questioning by Wilmington police, Chief Bobby Cummings said. Police haven't announced any charges or released the names of any suspects. No weapons were recovered at the scene.

Joyner’s injuries were so severe that medics performed CPR at the scene and then airlifted her to a hospital, where she later died. Officials plan to conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the fight, but students suggested to WPVI and NBC Philadelphia that the fight was over a boy. Cummings said he was not aware of any issues at the school in the days before the fight, and added that the school is not considered a violent one.

"This is not only an unspeakable tragedy for her family, but also for the school, and the entire community," New Castle County Vocational-Technical School District said in a statement. Classes at the school were canceled after the incident.

"I'm so upset that the young lady lost her life today. Things like this shouldn't happen. My heart bleeds for the family, the kids that go to this school, administrators, and our city," Mayor Dennis Williams said.
