RNC Chair Ready To Broker A Truce Between Donald Trump, Paul Ryan

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said Friday that he will work to close the divide between House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Donald Trump, the party's presumptive nominee.

Ryan said Thursday during an appearance on CNN that he was “not ready” to endorse Trump.

Trump called Priebus within minutes of Ryan’s statement, the party chairman said at a breakfast hosted by Politico.

“It wasn’t like furious or anything. It was, ‘What do I need to do?’” Priebus said of his conversation with the business mogul. “I said, ‘Listen, my view is just relax and be gracious and I’ll talk to Paul and we’ll try to work on this.’”

Priebus said he's confident Trump and Ryan can "work through differences."

"I know Paul really well, and I know he's being honest, and I know how he feels," he said of the speaker. Both men hail from Wisconsin, and Priebus was the state's Republican Party chairman before making the jump to the national party.

A meeting between Ryan and Trump had been previously scheduled for next week, and Priebus said that it is still on.

Ryan is "very comfortable with sitting down with Donald Trump," he said. "It may be at my office. It may be somewhere else, but we're going to have that meeting to start the process of unifying."

For now, it doesn't look as if Trump is heeding the chairman's advice about being "gracious."

The real estate mogul issued on statement on Thursday saying, “I am not ready to support Speaker Ryan’s agenda,” and attacked Ryan on Twitter Friday morning.

Additionally, Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson told CNN on Friday that Ryan isn’t fit to be House speaker if he won’t endorse Trump.
