"We just wore the shirts to take a stand for ourselves."

Two students devised a plan to speak out against their vocal Trump-supporting classmates in the form of a T-shirt.

Sisters Angelina Alvarez and Alexcia Alvarez told The Huffington Post that they were uncomfortable watching their fellow peers at Newport Harbor High School in Costa Mesa, California, support Donald Trump, a candidate who has frequently spoken out against Latinos. So after witnessing a pro-Trump rally that turned violent in their city in April, the students wore shirts with the words "Dump Trump" to school to express their frustration.

The school's administration immediately asked the students to take the shirts off due to "safety concerns" -- a request that wasn't asked of students wearing pro-Trump gear, according to the sisters. But the students said that they demanded the right to wear their anti-Trump shirts on campus. The school later reversed its decision.

Since the start of the presidential election, the Alvarez sisters both said to HuffPost that the Latino students at their high school have experienced ongoing harassment and hateful graffiti targeting the minority groups.

In the video above, the sisters explain the heated political climate at their school and why it's important for them to wear the shirts.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
