Hillary Clinton Wins New Jersey Democratic Primary

Hillary Clinton won New Jersey's Democratic presidential primary Tuesday, upping her pledged delegate count as she closes in on her party's presidential nomination.

The former secretary of state came into Tuesday's race with a significant lead in the polls over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

The win puts Clinton closer to the tally of 2,383 delegates needed to become the party's presumptive nominee. The Associated Press already called the national race for Clinton on Monday night, based on its tally of pledged delegates and superdelegates, a decision that the Sanders campaign denounced as premature.

New Jersey has 142 delegates, whom it awards proportionately. Clinton also won the New Jersey Democratic primary in 2008, though she eventually lost the nomination to now-President Barack Obama.

In this year's race, she had the backing of the state's two Democratic senators, Cory Booker and Robert Menendez.

Voters in California, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and New Mexico also cast ballots on Tuesday, wrapping up the state caucuses and primaries. The District of Columbia will vote on June 14.
