It's time to start treating people with mental illness with the compassion they deserve. One key to doing so? Stop perpetuating myths about mental health on public platforms.

A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that U.S. media outlets generate news stories that disproportionately associate mental illness with violence. More than one third of stories that mention mental health disorders link them with harmful behavior toward others, according to the research. But studies show that individuals with a mental health disorder are more likely to be victims of a violent crime than perpetrators.
