Moth On Ronaldo's Face Becomes Star Of Euro 2016 Final

The insect was wiping away his tears.

Portugal may have won the Euro 2016 soccer tournament in Paris on Sunday night, but the team’s 1-0 victory over host nation France is being upstaged by a moth.

Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo was sitting down and nearly in tears before leaving the field with an injury when the insect momentarily landed by his right eye. Some people have lightheartedly suggested it wanted to wipe away his tears.

It didn’t take long for the internet to do what it does best.

First up, the moth gained around a dozen of its very own Twitter accounts.

One in particular, @ronaldosmoth, racked up more than 10,000 followers in a matter of minutes by posting such gems as these:

Of course, it didn’t end there.

As the two teams continued to battle it out on the pitch, the #mothonface and #mothgate hashtags soon trended on Twitter.

As for exactly why the Silver Y moth was flying around Paris’ Stade de France in the first place, the Guardian reports that an enormous swarm landed inside the stadium prior to kickoff.

Richard Fox, from the Butterfly Conservation society, said the insects were migrating through France to northern Europe in search of new breeding grounds when the venue’s powerful lights drew them inside.
