Elizabeth Warren: Donald Trump's Divisive Tactics Empower Those At The Top

“When we turn on each other, bankers can run our economy from Wall Street and giant corporations can send our last jobs overseas.”

PHILADELPHIA ― Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) labeled Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump a fraudulent plutocrat dividing the country by race, religion and gender to empower the oligarchy, in her speech Monday at the Democratic National Convention.

“Racial hatred was part of keeping the powerful on top,” Warren said while harkening back to Martin Luther King Jr.’s explanation of how segregation was used to divide the working class by race. “When we turn on each other, bankers can run our economy from Wall Street and giant corporations can send our last jobs overseas.”

The statement sought to bring together different blocs of the Democratic Party using the same refrain against a rigged political and economic system touted by both Warren and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Warren hit on many common themes used by Sanders in his endorsement of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. She explained that Congress does not get caught in gridlock when it comes to handing out corporate favors. However, when it comes to helping workers, “you’ve got a fight on your hands.”

Democrats battle for the working people, Warren said, and Clinton has been fighting her whole career.

As for Trump, Warren countered the Republican nominee’s acceptance speech in Cleveland by stating that he’s on the other side of fights for working Americans.

“Where was Donald Trump in all these fights,” she said. “Not once did he lift a finger to help working people. Time after time he preyed on working people, people in debt, people who had fallen on hard times. He’s conned them, he’s defrauded them and he’s ripped them off.”

He launched Trump University ― “a fake university” ― to scam Americans, “was excited for the 2008 housing crash,” and sent his businesses into bankruptcy six times to scam debtors and avoid paying workers and small businesses, she said.

“What kind of a man cheats students and workers,” Warren said. “I’ll tell you what kind of man, a man who must never be president of the United States.”

Editor's note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims -- 1.6 billion members of an entire religion -- from entering the U.S.
