Few of us have seen a presidential election quite like this. And for many people, including '80s pop star and world famous percussionist Sheila E., that’s not necessarily a good thing.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in my lifetime,” explained the 58-year-old singer-drummer in a recent video interview with NBC. “The separation, the negativity, the bullying, the division… people being angry and fighting, and it’s just been horrible. It looks like a reality television [show]. It’s embarrassing for us as a country.”
Sheila E., who’s given name is Sheila Escovedo, went on to explain why now, more than ever, people of color need to show up to the polls and vote this November.
“This country was based on all Americans – immigrants, natives, straight, gay. It doesn’t matter what ethnicity you were or are, this country has been founded on the people. So we as Latin, African American people, we need to go out and vote. We want change and we want things, we have to go out and vote for it. It’s not just gonna come to us. It’s really important for us to continue to go out and support and vote and make a difference and help change happen.”
As for who she’s voting for, “The Glamorous Life” singer revealed she’s with Hillary Clinton in 2016. She showed her support for Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, where she performed “La Cuna” with her father, Latin Jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo, and her brothers Peter and Juan.
