Failures are only failures when you don’t learn from them, says motivational speaker Jay Shetty.

In a new HuffPost Rise video featured above, Shetty looks to J.K. Rowling, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton and Bill Gates as examples of the infinite opportunities that difficulties can bring.

“[Rowling] was diagnosed with clinical depression,” he said. “Her marriage had failed, and she was jobless with a dependent child. However, despite the difficulties she experienced, it was during this time that she started writing Harry Potter.”

In providing these examples of wildly successful people, Shetty paints a larger picture about needing to experience the world and take risks, instead of focusing on building your resume.

“Our value is not created by the price of our clothes or our bank balance or the job title we have,” he said. “See, we should be building life and not just building our CVs.”

In the video above, watch Shetty explain his view on embracing both the ups and downs of your career.

This video was produced by Stephanie Petchers and Jay Shetty and edited by Jenna Kline.
