Thousands gathered outside the Palacio de Bellas Artes on Monday to pay their final respects to singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel in Mexico City, Mexico.

Many fans held pictures of El Divo de Juárez and farewell messages as the star’s ashes were transferred with a funeral procession into Mexico’s national theater, where the artist made history by becoming the first non-classical musician to perform there in 1990.

The 66-year-old was on tour in the United States when he died of a fatal heart attack on Aug. 28 in his Santa Monica, California, home.
