Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was just as horrified with the second presidential debate as the rest of us.
Armstrong, who stopped by The Huffington Post on Monday to discuss his new movie, “Ordinary World,” alongside director Lee Kirk, said the town-hall style debate brought up a groundswell of emotions.
“I feel sad. I feel angry. I feel sort of shameful and I feel like I need to take a shower,” he said. “They brought it in the gutter before it even started.”
The musician said that the debate, which was full of heated moments between presidential nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, missed the mark in more ways than one.
“I don’t even think that it’s a true reflection of where we’re at right now,” he said. “I think it’s just one man’s shit show.”
From the band’s Grammy-winning album “American Idiot,” which took on the Iraq War, to the latest single “Bang Bang,” which discusses gun violence, Armstrong has never been one to shy away from social and political issues. Those messages resonate in the band’s new album “Revolution Radio,” as well.
While “American Idiot” pointedly critiqued the Bush administration, Armstrong told HuffPost’s Lauren Moraski that the new album focuses more on “the issues” rather than specific political moments this time around.
“It could be anything from watching television and seeing tanks and tear gas from a city like Ferguson to Black Lives Matter to global warming and trying to reflect that in song,” he said.
According to Armstrong, the “badass record,” which the trio of band members recorded in an intimate Oakland studio, brings back the band’s traditional aesthetic.
“It’s personal. It’s political and it’s Green Day,” he said.
“Ordinary World,” which stars Armstrong as a former punk rocker struggling to cope with life, opens in select theaters on Friday. It will also be available in digital HD and On Demand.
