Inspiring 7-Year-Old Girl Shatters Misconceptions About Down Syndrome

"It’s not scary. It’s so exciting!”

An inspiring little girl is clearing up some misconceptions about Down syndrome.

In honor of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, California mom Jennifer Varanini Sanchez posted two video of her 7-year-old daughter Sofia talking about her disorder on Instagram. In the videos, Sofia shows that, contrary to popular belief, it is not inherently limiting or “scary.”

In the first video, Sofia affirms that having Down syndrome doesn’t stop her from pursuing her dreams. “I can do anything at all,” she says, adding, “Yes I am smart ... Yes I am kind ... I’m capable.”

In the second video, the little girl talks about what it means to have Down syndrome.

”It’s not scary. It’s so exciting,” she says. “It’s not scary at all.”

The second video reached over 6.6 million views on Facebook.

Sofia and her 8-year-old brother Joaquin both have Down syndrome. Jennifer told CBS News that she and her husband decided to adopt Sofia from Ukraine after giving birth to Joaquin and developing a desire to help kids just like him.

The mom said her daughter is passionate about speaking up for “her people.” Sofia “loves her life and she loves herself,” she added.
