The stars hadnβt even sat down at the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday when the gaffes started rolling in.
On the red carpet, NBCβs Al Roker admitted that he called Jessica Biel βJessica Alba.β The sci-fi film βArrivalβ was referred to as βThe Arrival.β βAmerican Horror Storyβ was referred to as βAmerica Horror Story.β βTransparentβ was called βTransgender.β
But perhaps the most awkward mistake of the red carpet came via George W. Bushβs daughter Jenna Bush Hager, who asked Pharrell about being nominated for scoring the film βHidden Fences.β The problem is, Pharrell isnβt nominated for the music in βHidden Fences,β because there is no film called βHidden Fences.β
There is a movie called βHidden Figures,β for which Pharrell is nominated for Best Original Score, along with Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch. But Bush Hager mashed together the title of that film β which is about three black women who helped NASA during the Space Race β with the film βFences,β a 2016 film about a black family based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name.
The fact that Bush Hager mixed up two films is forgivable. But the fact that she mixed up two films starring African-American men and women made it a bit more awkward, to say the least. Pharrellβs subtle side-eye said as much.
UPDATE β Monday, 5:42 p.m.: Pharrell said itβs all good.
