Here's How Senate Democrats Plan To Vote On Trump Supreme Court Nominee Neil Gorsuch

President Donald Trump has nominated Neil Gorsuch, a federal appeals judge in Denver, to the Supreme Court seat of the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

The announcement was met by jubilation from Republicans and conservatives across the country, who saw the 49-year-old jurist as a nominee in the mold of the originalist Scalia.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), however, said had “very serious doubts” about Gorsuch’s record as a “mainstream” nominee and warned Trump he would need 60 votes in the Senate to get confirmed.

Gorsuch is almost certain to receive the support of all 52 Republican senators, but he will need Democratic votes in order to reach the 60-vote threshold (unless the GOP changes the rules unilaterally and eliminates the filibuster for Supreme Court nominations. More on that process here).

“If President Trump were serious about healing the divisions in America and undoing the damage wrought by Senate Republicans last year, he could have named Merrick Garland to fill this seat,” Merkley said, referring to President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee whom the GOP blocked last year.

“This is a stolen seat being filled by an illegitimate and extreme nominee, and I will do everything in my power to stand up against this assault on the Court.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts

“We don’t need another justice who spends his time looking out for those with money and influence,” Warren said. “Based on the long and well-established record of Judge Gorsuch, I will oppose his nomination.”
