Kayleigh McEnany, one of CNN’s in-house surrogates for President Donald Trump, claimed that President Barack Obama went golfing after Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was murdered by terrorists.
“You have President Obama who, after the ― I believe it was after the beheading of Daniel Pearl ― spoke about how upset he was and then rushed off to a golf game,” McEnany said on CNN on Monday night.
Pearl was abducted and killed in 2002 when George W. Bush was president. Obama was a state senator in Illinois at the time.
McEnany may have been referring to freelance war correspondent James Foley, who was killed by terrorists in 2014. At the time, Obama was on vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, where he issued a statement and then went golfing. Obama was criticized over the incident, which he later admitted looked bad.
McEnany’s comments drew a swift reaction on social media, where she was blasted for botching the facts and for using Pearl’s name to score political points:
.@kayleighmcenany JAMES FOLEY. Invoking reverence for a man u can't be bothered to remember is insulting. Mem aid: https://t.co/flpfvrnzRo https://t.co/NRpwLcjesq

@kayleighmcenany Using Daniel Pearl's murder by terrorists to support your argument is a new low in American journalism. Congratulations.

.@kayleighmcenany You, madam, are a disgrace to democracy and the antithesis of courageous journalists like Daniel Pearl. https://t.co/r94d4gq2IT

@CNN @donlemon Apologize to the families of Daniel Pearl & James Foley then fire McEnany. Opposing voices should have some brain activity!
— Pamela Albers (@palbers1956) March 28, 2017
I blame CNN for hiring Kayleigh McEnany a lot more than I blame McEnany herself, who is a brainless twit.

Hey @kayleighmcenany Pearl was killed in 2002-I know because I was at the CIA-let me know if you need a lesson on al Qaida & terrorism https://t.co/fg57RKsEKB

@AmosPosner she probably meant James Foley but either way it's idiotic that she doesn't know this
— KNUCK (@knuckletits) March 28, 2017
@yashar hey @kayleighmcenany you going to apologize for that? @donlemon you going to make her? #FactsMatter
— Laura Roberts (@lorelilee18346) March 28, 2017
No one who honors the memory of Daniel Pearl would make this error. @kayleighmcenany is an absolute disgrace. https://t.co/IR1uIXeFlV

@kayleighmcenany You hit rock bottom tonight. Shame on you. https://t.co/3tl0QlAAbG

@3ChicsPolitico @CNN @kayleighmcenany that is a prime example of how deep the hate for Obama goes with them
— Sesan72 (@Watson3172) March 28, 2017
@CNN This is horrible - and disrespectful of Daniel Pearl's life and his family's pain - why is she still on the air? Facts matter!! https://t.co/axsThvi90s
