You don’t need to be a baseball fan to appreciate this moment.
Brock Stassi learned Thursday that he made the opening day roster for the Philadelphia Phillies. For a guy who was a 33rd round draft pick and toiled for six years in the minor leagues, this was overwhelming news.
Here’s a touching clip where he thanked a scout who “saw something in me and I’m just so thankful.”
Stassi, a 27-year-old first baseman and outfielder, earned the promotion. He has hit .333 (19 for 57) with six homers and 17 RBIs in spring training.
According to CSN Philly, manager Pete Mackanin broke the news by asking Stassi, “What number do you want?”
Stassi will be suited up when the Phillies visit Cincinnati for their season opener on Monday.
Stassi’s younger brother, Max, a catcher for the Houston Astros, gave his sibling a shoutout on Twitter for overcoming the odds.
