Magic Johnson Talks To Ellen About His Son Coming Out As Gay

"It’s all about loving them ― no matter who they are."

Magic Johnson appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Wednesday and opened up about his experiences surrounding the coming out of his son EJ.

EJ, who came out in 2013, is a reality star who has appeared on “Rich Kids of Beverly Hills” and his own spinoff “EJ NYC.” Johnson told DeGeneres that he’s learned through his son’s coming out that you need to love your children ― no matter what.

“It’s all about you not trying to decide what your daughter or son should be or what you want them to become,” he says in the above clip. “It’s all about loving them ― no matter who they are, what they decide to do. When my son came out I was so happy for him and happy for us as parents. And we love him ― EJ is amazing.”

Johnson went on to say that it’s crucial that parents of LGBTQ kids remain supportive of their children because of all of the discrimination they will face.

“You’e got to support your child because there’s so many people who try to discriminate against them so they need you to support them because if you don’t support them, who is going to support them? And love them.”

Johnson and his wife Cookie previously discussed EJ’s coming out, sharing that their initial struggle stemmed from their religious beliefs. However, Cookie said that it was her commitment to God that led to her supporting her gay son. “Ultimately, I just prayed to God and said God, ‘You reveal to me how you feel about this,’” she said, “and he was like ‘Love. Love your child.’ And that’s what I ― that’s what Jesus was about: love.”
