Congressman Missed Ride To Baseball Practice Where Shooting Happened

After a gunman opened fire on a group of Republican lawmakers during a practice game for the Congressional Baseball Game in Alexandria, Virginia, Rep. Ryan Costello (R-Pa.) tweeted about how he was supposed to be there.

The shooting occurred around 7 a.m. on Wednesday. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) was shot in the hip, and a staffer of Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) was also among those hit. Five people, including the suspect, were transported to a local hospital, police said.

Costello was supposed to be at the practice game, but had missed his ride by two minutes. He tweeted out a message to indicate he was “fine” and praying for his colleagues:

Costello’s serendipitous lateness prevented him from being present for the horrors Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) recalled to CNN. Paul indicated that “nobody would’ve survived” had Capitol Police not been there and that “it would’ve been a massacre without them.”
