There's nothing surprising in Sarah Palin's decision not to run for re-election as governor of Alaska. After all, if you've got a shot to become leader of the free world, it helps to have nothing but time to give the people of Iowa and New Hampshire in the year leading up to their caucus and primary, and that's hard to do if you have to run a state from which you can see Russia.
But Palin's decision to step down this month from the governor's mansion? Now that's a whole 'nother kettle of wild salmon.
Today we heard and saw Palin as we never have before. No, I'm not talking about the incoherence of her resignation statement; her incoherence in the infamous Couric interviews became the stuff of legend. Yet with all hectoring she took for her not-ready-for-prime-time performances during the campaign, her confidence never seemed to flag. But today brought us a different picture: Her voice quavering, Palin seemed unsure of herself as she sought to explain without explaining her reasons for stepping down before the end of her first term as governor.
Granted, Sarah Palin has had a very tough week, what with Todd Purdum's takedown in Vanity Fair, and the release of a testy e-mail exchange between the former vice presidential candidate and McCain campaign manager Steve Schmidt.
By her own account, however, the week from hell is not what drove today's announcement. The decision had been in the making for a while, she said. But why? As her reasons, Palin noted the meanness of the media, and the hail of ethics complaints filed against her (in a state in which the bar is quite low for the filing of such complaints). Yet none of the complaints filed so far have stuck, so what gives?
The governor mentioned a resulting half million worth of legal bills for her and husband, Todd, but that should be chump change with someone with Sarah Palin's standing among the G.O.P. base. Surely, she could raise that with a legal defense fund.
Palin basically said she was getting out of the way in order to take one for the team:
Let me go back to a comfortable analogy for me -- sports... basketball. I use it because you're naïve if you don't see the national full-court press picking away right now: A good point guard drives through a full court press, protecting the ball, keeping her eye on the basket... and she knows exactly when to pass the ball so that the team can win. And I'm doing that, keeping our eye on the ball that represents sound priorities: smaller government, energy independence, national security, freedom. And I know when it's time to pass the ball -- for victory.
For some reason, the very ambitious Sarah Palin finds the need to take herself out of public view. It's hard not to speculate that there's another shoe yet to drop. But don't count her out; she's as tenacious a political fighter as I've ever seen. She'll no doubt put the time gained of her early exit from the governor's mansion to good use -- perhaps studying up on issues for her visits to the people of Iowa and New Hampshire.
When I first speculated that she would be John McCain's vice presidential pick, people said, Sarah who? Despite colossal missteps, she emerged from the 2008 presidential election as the darling of the Republican Party, her running mate returning to the Senate as a has-been. Mark my words: She'll be back.

As an entertainer, Sarah Palin is the gift that keeps on giving. Her garbled syntax, alone, is so wonderfully wierd, I hate to miss a single performance.
But unfortunately, she will be back. As a so-called politician with lofty, national ambitions and a rabid, devoted following of like-minded morons.
We underestimate her at our peril.
Your last statement is chillingly true
She leaves her 1 year old job as Governor, to run for Vice President (Attention seeker!!)
She complains about her Press and Family but parades her family in the press (Attention seeker!!)
She picks a National Fight with David Lettermen (Attention seeker!!)
She quits her Job a day before the 4th of July holiday (Attention seeker!!)
She tweets and blogs about her decision to resign(Attention seeker)
She quits colleges that didn't pay attention to her. (Attention seeker!!)
I think we kinda get what makes up Sarah Palin's character. Its very simple. Attention.
If the Little Miss Perfect Children's Pageant was the Biggest Thing going on in the USA at this time, Sarah Palin would throw herself into that, you betcha! Sarah Palin, will be back, because as long as there is a spotlight, that clown will try to sweep it up.
excellent!
Unfortunately, I doubt she'll go away long enough to give us a "comeback". I don't think she's capable of giving up that spotlight McCain gave her; she loves it too much.
I took your admonition to "mark my words" to heart, so I printed your post and took out my black Sharpie markers. I tried to cross the words out with one stroke, but no luck. Had to use at least 10-20 strokes, back and forth across the words. But then I discovered that if I turned the page over, I could see a bit of the lettering still, so I took out my scissors and cut around the words, and replaced them with a piece of black construction paper. This worked, but now the post has lost its original meaning.
best comment of the day!
99% of the comments made about Palin on this site are either A.) False B.) Stupid C.) Ignorant D.) All the Above. I beleive having petty ethics violations filed against her around the clock was prohibiting her from doing what she was elected to do(serve the people). Speaking of empty interviews and speeches just listen to obama, where is the substance? He is by far the most boring president to listen to in my lifetime. Without his teleprompter speech writing 28 year old your liberal boy wonder would be even more clueless than he already is. Palin in 2012.
Thank you for spouting the talking point that fratboy neocons use 99% of the time. "He uses a teleprompter." Is there nothing else in your little pea brains that you can think up to criticize President Barack Hussein Obama on? Goodness, we know it's all about the pup tent in your pants. I mean, let's face it, if palin looked like barbara bush you all would have ditched her long ago.
Love your moniker! You have been faved...:)
I think what we need to do is just ignore the tr0//s. I've been told this many times before by other posters....but I still responded. I'm done - these people are fake...as fake as Glen Beck, Billbo, Rush, et al. They enjoy riling us up - for whatever reason. We just have to ignore them. They won't change, and we shouldn't make them change....let them spew...it's all they've got now.
Obama is doing more work in 6 months than GWB in one term or office.
We are doing great., do we have a lot more to get done....h3// yeah, but we are on the right track...let's not play into their silly little games.
First of all, I am pretty sure that you don't suffer from any voter's remorse.
That being said....seriously, what is with you guys? Why are you so hateful? Why are you so angry? We have a POTUS who is working to fix things. You might not agree with him, or his actions....but why are you so negative?
And your last statement speaks volumes, or rather-not even.
Oh my god are na_ive.
From Vanity Fair:
"But Palin’s lack of knowledge turned out not to hurt her. Andrew Halcro later remembered that he and Palin once compared notes about their many encounters, and she said, “Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes, no papers, and yet when asked questions, you spout off facts, figures, and policies, and I’m amazed. But then I look out into the audience and I ask myself, Does any of this really matter?”"
'Nuff said. It's sheer ambition without any knowledge or quest for knowledge.
can I change "quest for knowledge" to "thirst for knowledge"
Yes. Both would apply.
Yeah, she'll be back, all right.
On A.M. radio, giving Rush Limbaugh a run for his money as Grand Pooh-Bah of the Republican Party.
Fox News. It's so obvious.
She'll be back, as a paid political commentator, and as a headliner at events like CPAC to open up the wallets of attendees. (the way she's flaked out on these in the past doesn't help, but still, not a group taken to learning from experience.
The GOP seniors surely can tell she's not actually capable of forming policy, or brokering a deal between two essential parties.
She is a terrific speaker (usually) who knows exactly which dog whistle to use, to tell the crowd that She Is One Of Them And Their Only Hope.
If she could learn something about national economics or law, she should be a formidable opponnent - in talk shows, if not actual policy negotiations.
Before she comes back she has to go away. Now would be nice.
Always lookin' on the bright side!
Stan,
You're right that she'll "be back." But she won't study, she won't learn important lessons from her many past missteps, nor will she pick up support outside of her reactionary base.
Past governors who've run for the presidency have completed at least one term. Trying to mold her quitting as "mavericky" is desperate; any political support she might have built by working as governor has been shot.
Of course there will be a spot for her at Fox, but she won't last there either.
excellent observation
Tenacious political fighter?
She's had everything handed to her on a silver platter.
That Sarah Palin would be given any credibility at all, beyond even that given to Rush Limbaugh, which isn't much, is beyond me. You call yourself a feminist, Adele? Are you also for animal rights, a woman's right to choose, the environment, green energy, and all the good that's coming that she will fight with her hate and lies to stop? All the while using her good looks to mesmerize the ignorant like Medusa?
Way to further the causes you claim to be for, Adele. You had the chance to stand against her and you chose to stand with her just because she’s a woman, never mind her many inadequacies.
Excellent summary. Thank you.
That seems a little harsh...I don't see how you could take away from the article that she is not a feminist, or environmentalist, or pro-choice.
I do understand where you are coming from on giving her credibility, but I also see it as a warning. We can not take this woman for granted. Remember what happened when we thought Gore won, or when we thought Kerry won....we have to take her seriously, but I think the pressure has really gotten to her.
Yeah, she may be back, but most likely as some talking head in wingnut land. After this resignation, how could anyone with a functioning brain, take her political aspirations seriously? She'll spend the rest of her career in crazy-town, she will make a lot of money off her wingnut base, and the rest of us sane types will relegate her to Ann Coulter/Rush Limbaugh status.
Nailed it.
I seriously doubt there will be much studying of anything, let alone of the needs and/or interests of potential constituents. The woman seems to have less intellectual curiosity than shrub, and I didn't think that was possible.
