In the summer of 2011, my younger brother and I decided to 'do' the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. In school I learned the countries in that order and that's also the way I learned their capitals: Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, which also became our route for the trip.

The Baltics always felt like a mystery to me, it being so close to my native country Sweden, just on the other side of the Baltic Sea, yet far away when it comes to culture and history. We set out for a beach and culture tour, searching out these things. But our only real set goal was to arrive in Vilnius for our flight home ten days later. We set off by boat and had only two nights booked in Tallinn.

The Baltic Beach and Culture Tour '11

When traveling without a schedule the journey is always open for unexpected things to happen, this time it really excelled our expectations and over the course of the years I've planned less and less for each trip. This also includes a certain level of chance when it comes to photography, I can never expect what will come out of the material that I photograph, and since I shoot film, the level of chance increases even more.

This particular time I carried one of my smaller cameras, a Yashica T5 - now a modern classic, which allowed me to make quick snapshots of people and places in passing and still with the level of quality that I can use the images for my artworks. The bright, almost harsh, summer light affected the images and created a dreamy feel which also corresponds with our experiences of the trip.
