Al Jazeera English Beats Israel's Ban on Reporters in Gaza with Exclusive Coverage

Some may call it propaganda but I call it hardcore reporting. If you are not watching Al Jazeera English's coverage of the War on Gaza, you are missing much, if not, most of the story.

Israel has invaded Gaza, divided it, and banned foreign journalists from entering -- but Al Jazeera English was inside before the war began, and its reporting is as inexorable, though more precise, than Israel's "surgical attacks."

When Israel closed the border crossing into Gaza they successfully prevented most journalists and reporters from entering the strip.

But unlike Western media companies who generally have their correspondents based in Jerusalem, Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin and Sherine Tadros were already in Gaza before Israel's invasion, leaving them with the huge responsibility of providing virtually exclusive reporting -- and they've delivered.

I could ramble on about their thorough and thought-provoking reporting of this controversial story or I could send you to Livestation where you can quickly download a program for free that will allow you to watch Al Jazeera English in high quality (as well as dozens of other international news channels) legally.

In case you are the type who insists on tasting ice cream before buying a cone, here is a sample of their reporting from Gaza before the ground invasion:

And here is a sample of a segment after Israel's troops crossed the border:

If you are curious here is an example of a recent interview with Knesset Member Yuval Steinitz for the Israeli perspective.

Flipping to channel 52 on my tiny Japanese-made television here in Beirut, I get a first-hand account of what is happening in Gaza. The network shows live images that I unfortunately know most Americans will never see. Angle aside, the access they have and context provided is unparalleled in the coverage of this war and enough of a reason to scroll back up and click on the link. Their coverage has included shots of the remains of buildings in Gaza, footage of explosions and interviews with doctors at Al Shifa Hospital (the main one in Gaza), aid workers and civilians on the ground. Of course, like other news networks, they also feature hard-hitting interviews with top Israeli, Palestinian, and international leaders

When Al Jazeera English first launched in 2006 I was living in New York City and had to settle with watching the channel via YouTube.

When I traveled home to Austria (a country that, like most others, carries the channel) I was thrilled to get a chance to watch it in its entirety and judge for myself whether a budding news organization with big ambitions in a region of the world thought to have superficial news coverage would deliver on its promise of providing an alternative compelling, but fair perspective on international news stories.

The U.S. government has jailed an Al Jazeera reporter (accusing him of being a terrorist) and has dropped a 500-pound bomb on the Al Jazeera bureau in Kabul in the past, but this does not deny that it is a top notch news organization that despite some fair criticisms in its coverage of the West, provides a perspective often missing in international news coverage. And if you don't believe me - give it a try.

If I flip the channel up one I'm watching CNN International -- a channel I was addicted to while growing up and that first introduced me to the wonders and worries of the world. But despite CNN's well-earned and undeniable impressive reputation and all of its bells and whistles, it has not matched Al Jazeera's in-depth coverage this time around.

Israel not only used the cover of darkness on Saturday to launch its ground invasion into Gaza. But despite a Supreme Court decision that allows up to 12 foreign journalists to cross the border whenever the border crossings between Israel and Gaza open for humanitarian cases it has refused their entry in an effort to keep the international community in the dark. But Al Jazeera English has been pulling the covers off, offering insight as to why Israel may have conveniently closed the borders in the lead up to this invasion.

On Friday, when Israel opened the border and allowed those in Gaza carrying foreign passports to leave, they did not let journalists in.

A month ago a letter signed by AP Chief Executive Tom Curley, Reuters Editor-in-Chief David Schlesinger, New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller and other executives from CNN, BBC and many international broadcasters was submitted to the Israeli government emphasizing their growing concern for an "unprecedented denial of access to the Gaza Strip for the international media."

Israeli officials repeatedly claim it was coincidental and not their intention. But in the past foreign journalists have been allowed to enter Gaza, when Israeli journalists have not been, even during times of war.

Here is an ABC Australia report on the ban documenting an exchange with security.

As the recent global economic crisis and this latest crisis in Gaza show, our world is large but it is getting smaller. We are more interconnected than we have ever been and Al Jazeera English offers a comprehensive and ground-breaking global perspective, emphasizing news from the developing world and providing a context for it.

Sadly, major cable providers still refuse to carry Al Jazeera English, but perhaps, if Americans watch their coverage of this war, they will realize that while it is not an NBC comedy show, it is "Must See TV."

The media in the U.S. is entirely controlled at all levels. I attended an anti-Israel demonstration last Friday in downtown Chicago. You would think that a crowd of 4000-5000 people would be newsworthy but the Chicago Tribune never mentioned a word about it. This is just one example. The people in Israel are able to get a more balanced view of what is happening then the average citizen in America! Thank God for the Internet and Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera is one of my Youtube subscriptions. They have a lot of great programs and journalists. I was pretty surprised at how even-handed a lot of their reports are. I expected a bit of pro-Muslim slant but when I view their wide range of stories, it seems pretty balanced. I find it intriguing that they do not appear to be as pro-corporation as most Western media. They have a lot more stories about human needs and desires (I especially like thier food reports from major cities.)

I still get a healthy, daily dose of Western news from BBC, too. But I prefer the straight news from BBC and Al J to the celebrity-obsessed US outlets. Sometimes even HuffPo gets a bit too gossipy with their celebrity news on the front page.

For the current Israel-Gaza issue, I recommend everyone read various news and opinions. Both sides have interesting points.

I'm watching a clip from Rachel Maddow and Richard Engel is reporting from the border. Israel has full-on said that they want to control the information coming out. He mentioned that Palestinian and other Arab stations are getting some bad news out, so why don't they allow Western journalists in? Answer: Because that would just be more bad news coming out of Gaza.

Wow, shameless!

Good job AL Jazeera

I have been looking Al Jazeera for years now. They actually push democracy in many countries so it is no surprise that governments like in Egypt or Singapore have a dislike for AJ. Al Jazeere has some of the best jounalists on board. They reported from inside Zimbabwe and Mugabe surly must have hatred them because they have always both sides to respond and not one sided views.

They broadcasted from Kuala Lumpur and did a very good job on ballanced reporting on the Malaysian election. The Malaysian government even called in and warned them that they can loose the licence. My favoured anchor is Ritz Khan that was before with CNN but he too complained that CNN reports one-sided so he left.

Many reporters of Al Jazeera have been killed already including by airstrikes during the attack on Iraq by your current presdent which called them a terrorist TV channel. I was a fan of CNN many years back but CNN is one sided and when Wolf Blizter opens his mouth b4 and speaks down on Obama, at times I can really puke.

On Gaza they report only the side from the US and Israel points of view with a couple of minutes, CNNArabia and CNNTurk has no viewers at all and they program trash and can be compared to Voice of America (voanews.com) which by the way is at times better in reporting then CNN. BUT Larry King, I love this guy.

"BUT Larry King, I love this guy." - Lol, really?! Ok. I agree with much of what you said though. Riz Khan is only one of the good former CNN anchors/reporters they got--Shihab Ritanzi (sp?) is another good one. I think Al Jazeera is really a good channel (at least the English version) and are far more balanced and indeed informative than the journalistic trash in the States (CNN, MSNBC, FOX).

The coverage is great. Take care, and stay safe.

I was waiting and waiting to get Al Jazeera English on Comcast, but after calling them last year found out they were denied the ability to be carried by Comcast and DirectTV.

i agree with the author; al-jazeera english is showing an incredibly important perspective in this horrifying war, and it is those of the citizens of Gaza. These men, women and children are experiencing blackouts, being cut off from the outside world, and are living in constant fear. violence can not be met with violence.

I spent some time over the weekend watching Al Jazeera English's coverage of the War on Gaza, and I found watching Al Jazeera English's coverage of the War on Gaza to show a different perspective of the conflict than we see day to day. They present an Israeli perspective, an Hamas perspective, and a Palestinian perspective.

Then they cut away from the coverage to run some "News programs" for a couple of hours.

How disappointingly superficial those programs were.

There was a "News Program" of the My Lai Massacre. the journalistic values of the program ranged between TMZ, and Fox News (and I think my observation is kind).

And it made me wonder why Dave Marash (a journalist I admire) left Al Jazeera English when he had taken such a significant career risk working for Al Jazeera English at a time in history when a American working for an Arabic News Organization could be viewed in an unfavorable way.

So, I went and read the "Why I left" story at the Columbia Journalism site and understood.

http://www.cjr.org/the_water_cooler/dave_marash_why_i_quit.php?page=all

If we could watch Al Jazeera English news coverage without the poorly produced, superficial "News Magazine" stories, inserted between hard news coverage I might come back to the site again.

I have no interest in watching TMZ type stories on any broadcast news station.

This is a continuation of US Israel policies in the region.

I'm not Jewish, and I have always opposed the occupation and settlements. Nevertheless, Al-Jazeera seems incapable of logic.

Hence:

If Hamas attacks Israel with rockets, Israel will fight back.

Hamas has attacked Israel with rockets.

THEREFORE,

Israel is fighting back.

I suspect that many, if not a majority, of Gazans understand this logic and secretly despise Hamas.

Al-Jazeera coverage is one-sided. It irresponsibly repeats and justifies the Hamas victimhood cant without reflecting on the Hamas leaders' depravity. They brought Israel, after many warnings, down on Gaza. What did they expect would happen to the people? Maybe the reporter could have asked the mother whether her children would be safer if Hamas stopped rocketing Israeli towns.

The news anchor questioning the Israeli graduated from the Hannity School of Dishonest Interviewing. He barraged the interviewee with non-sequiters and dismissals of unhelpful facts. He claimed that the Israelis should not be surprised at Hamas's actions in view of Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands. He ignores that Israel does not occupy Gaza and that Hamas did not shoot the rockets until after Israel withdrew. He also overlooks that Hamas wants Israel's destruction. Hamas will never give up until it is disarmed or destroyed.

Hamas leaders will not stop their hopeless campaign because they are prisoners of their own revenge fantasies. Unfortunately, the Gazans can not save themselves from Hamas. Only if the world forces Hamas's disbanding or disarming will the Gazans find peace. The Al-Jazeera propagandists don't help.

even though many if not all of today's media is biased, aljazeera.net does indeed bring a side of the story that is NEVER to be seen on any other major broadcast. i can understand your concern, however one should really look at the whole picture to be able to understand the present. when and if you have time, you should visit www.ifamericansknew.org a site that is free of ethnic or religious bias. to me, all wars involve two killing sides, but as once said "an eye for an eye" when the killing ratio is hundreds to one, then....

Al Jazeera's is doing on the ground reporting in an area that has no other information channels to the Western press.

Oddly, their coverage of the runup to the US elections was uncharacteristically good for the same reasons:

I live in Italy and have cable TV owned by Murdoch (Sky) and luckily Al Jazeeera English is one of the many channels we may see besides BBC, CNN International and others...it is the channel I am watching in these days as it is giving the service Ahmed Shihab-Eldin mentions in his article; it shows what really happens inside the Gaza strip and gives frequent interviews with with top Israeli, Palestinian, and international leaders, really enlightening!!
Unfortunately the top Israeli leaders, be they military or civilian experts, repeat in a parrot like way the same myths, difficult to listen to or to believe in... they often do not want to answer the questions they are asked and stick to the self-same propaganda sentences whereas the others usually analyze the situation in depth... I hoped this could be seen and followed in the US until I read tonight that it is not so... what a shame!!
I must really praise Ayman Mohyeldin and Sherine Tadros for the work they are doing inside the Gaza strip, they are high level professionals as well as their colleagues on the Israeli side of the border and the ones in the different locations of the Al Jazeera network. I am grateful to this network for its serious contribution to informing the international public...
I thank Ahmed Shihab-Eldin for suggesting how to follow this network to the US population or any population that does not have this service on cable TV..."

A small sampling of the current front page of Aljazeera.com. Note the tone throughout. Inside the article, you will find almost no objective reporting or facts.

"Top 5 lies about Israeli Assault on Gaza"
"The moral recession in democracies"
"Israel's lie machine is working flat out"
"Israelis evil actions"
"Somalia - another CIA backed coupe blows up"
"Can there be any doubt who the real terrorists are?"

Yes, but the content of those articles provide a counter-weight to the Israel-can-do-no-wrong articles in the US. They also have Israeli viewpoints expressed in every story, in a surprisingly balanced way. They've had Mark Regev on several times and regularly quote the Israeli stance. Some of their articles and editorials will have a slant, but no more than ours.

Aljazeera.con is NOT owned by the AlJazzera TV. Their site ends with .NET (not .COM). Their English site is at http://english.aljazeera.net/ ... The .COM site is owned by someone who claims to have founded it in London in 1992 (check their About US page).

There is no such thing as non-subjective news.

If you want a balanced view of the region and only can watch intl channels, you need a CNN / Fox / France24 / BBC / al Jazeera combo
