Joe the Neighbor: Noted Palin Author Moves Next Door to the Palins

What's Your Reaction:

Time to pop the corn, folks. Joe McGinniss, author of the epic political best-seller The Selling of the President about Richard Nixon, Going to Extremes about the Alaskan pipeline days, and others has his sights set on Sarah Palin. She will be the subject of his next book, and now she's also his neighbor.

McGinniss is also the journalist who wrote the comprehensive article entitled Pipe Dreams for Conde Nast's Portfolio in which he interviewed many in Palin's administration, a former governor, and experts in the field. This article introduced many in the Lower 48 to the fantasy gas pipeline Palin claimed was in the works during her famous speech at the Republican National Convention when she claimed, "I fought to bring about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history. And when that deal was struck, we began a nearly 40 billion-dollar natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence."

We're still waiting.

It was also the first introduction to most of America to the phenomenon of Palin's habit of "magical thinking."

McGinniss was also thwarted in his attempt to win an eBay auction for dinner with Sarah Palin, the proceeds of which went to charity. Hoping to win the auction, he had the high bid at one point close to the end. The amount was a whopping $60,101.01, and he was willing to go higher. And then something interesting happened. The Alaska Dispatch came out with a story identifying McGinniss as one of the bidders. When the unsuspecting McGinniss went to place his next bid in the amount of $60,301.01, he was met with a message saying he needed "pre-approval."

Despite his previous pre-approval, his dreams of winning the auction were dashed. McGinniss was unapproved, with only an hour to go. The winner was a Republican defense contractor who had already met Palin and was a big fan.

Perhaps to encourage the muse, or perhaps out of a sense of "why not," Mr. McGinniss has landed himself on the shores of Lake Lucille in Wasilla, right next door to the Palins. He's renting the house for the summer. While there is no indication that McGinniss had any plans to publish photos or information about the personal lives of the Palin children or anyone else, Sarah Palin has responded to the discovery of her famous neighbor in classic Palin style.

When I said "classic Palin style," if you immediately thought "wild, inappropriate over-reaction" you can give yourself a gold star. And if you guessed Facebook rant, give yourself another one. This one was just too big for the Twitter limit of 140 characters. With twitchy forced nonchalance, she offers to bake him a pie, offers to lend him sugar and says she'll keep her youngest son Trig quiet so McGinniss can enjoy his summer of peace and quiet while she constructs a giant fence. Construction has already begun to augment the existing large fence.

One wonders if she'll be constructing some kind of floating barrier to prevent the scores of curious boaters who float past the Palin's house every day taking pictures from catching a glimpse of the ex-governor gardening in shorts.

She also speculates (somewhere between the pie and the sugar) that he'll be spying in Piper's bedroom window, and watching her do the gardening while wearing skimpy summer clothing. It's quite something. Reading it is kind of like watching someone spontaneously combust.

Wonder what kind of material he'll gather while overlooking Piper's bedroom, my little garden, and the family's swimming hole?

And in a brilliant move, to attempt to show how intrusive he's going to be, and how much he will invade her privacy, she has actually published a picture of him sitting on the far side of the deck, minding his own business. You know... to show how inappropriate he is for whatever it is he might or might not do at some time in the future. Maybe. You know, like taking a creepy spy picture of her that she doesn't know about and then publishing it online to a hostile audience of a million Facebook users, and asking for comment.

Of all the words I can think of to describe how Palin has chosen to react to the news of her new neighbor, "presidential" isn't one of them. Is the the calm hand at the tiller? The unflappable commander in chief? The one you want with the nuclear launch codes? Just sayin'.

And Joe... don't eat the pie.

Random House, McGinniss' publisher has issued the following response:

One of the country's most respected nonfiction authors, Joe McGinniss, is presently reporting and writing his next book, tentatively titled Sarah Palin's Year of Living Dangerously, scheduled for publication in fall 2011 by Broadway Books. Mr. McGinniss is the author of Going to Extremes, a classic book about Alaska, and his work-in-progress returns him to the 49th state to examine Sarah Palin's significance as both a political and cultural phenomenon and as an embodiment of the contradictory forces that shaped Alaska as it moved into its second half-century of statehood. Well regarded for his in-depth, up-close reporting, Mr. McGinniss will be highly respectful of his subject's privacy as he investigates her public activities.

You know what I don't get? Palin's meme, "the media has attacked my children". How has that happened?

I remember the media puzzling over the McCain campaign announcing Bristol Palin's 5 month pregnancy in order to quell the year-long rumors that Bristol had been pregnant earlier in 2008, not Sarah Palin, with an infant later presented as "Trig".

Hardly an attack.

I remember reading only on blogs, not the MSM, comments about the presence of "Trig" on the RNC stage and occasional appearances during the campaign, and to crowds like an icon during her bookselling tour a year after the 2008 campaign. And even on the blogs, the comments were of concern for the infant's health.

Hardly an attack.

When news of Willow's B&E arrest and subsequent release without penalty became news, no one in the media attacked Willow. The media condemnation was levied on her parents for wielding their political clout with the local gendarmerie, especially when Willow was "rewarded" with the infamous Oscar gift suite raid in March.

Hardly an attack on the miscreant child.

And Piper? No one attacked her for trying to take care of "Trig", for accompanying her mother out on the ice in Philadelphia, or appearing with Palin at every campaign stop, speech, or booksigning stop in the past 2 years. And even on the blogs, the comments about Piper were of concern for her missing school.

Hardly an attack.

Isn't it about time the media shot down Palin's defensive whining?

Unless I'm mistaken, didn't the Palin (and extended) family hound, harrass, and badger the police commissioner over the State Trooper/ex-brother-in-law? They made his life hell. Dozens of emails and phone calls because they wanted the cop fired.
Once these people put you on their persona non grata list, I don't think they sleep until they get what they want. I hope McGinnis' editors and publisher are prepared...just sayin'...

No one really thought she would react to her new neighbor in a 'presidential' manner, did they? Shoot the lady doesn't have a presidential bone in her body. She does have plenty of demogogic bones, though, and it's expected she will use them. Frequently.

I read some of the comments on Palin's FB post, and many of those here. One thing I find hysterically funny and creepy, in about equal measures, is the perverted view of "freedom" the Palin-worshipers have.

The only reason McGinnis rented THIS house is that there was nothing else available and the local hotel would have charged him a lot more money. It was, in other words, just a coincidence. I'm sure he's not unhappy about the buzz, as it will only drive sales of the book. I know I'm gonna buy one, for instance. I've read others of his, and he's a good, solid and careful reporter.

But back to the "freedom" thing. The fringies that worship Sarah like freedom so much that, if I don't agree with them on anything, they're perfectly willing to jam their ideas right down my throat. Privacy? It only matters for Sara. She can invade McGinnis' privacy and that's OK.

She very well may be the GOP nominee next time around, but her character is completely unsuited for any high office or for having any power at all. She'd throw away the Constitution and toss any heretics right in jail.

Bush league, all the way. And take that any way you want.

Mr. McGinnis was sought out by the homeowner. This lady wanted to square a gripe she had with the Palin's for years, so she contacted the author.

Yup, turns out----"A neighbor of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin got so angry for what she says was unpaid bills for renovations that she decided she would try to rent her house to someone who wanted to look into Palin's life as a result -- what media reports are calling "revenge by rent.". Not too smart for someone with such high visibility to try to get away with nonpayment.

Seeing the photo of the Paylin home, it's much like $arah herself. Inappropriate for it's surrondings, and very tacky and garrish.

they showed a picture of a big rock planted out in front with her name and mayor of Wasilly on it. It looked ridiculous and grandeous!

Hate to agree with Sarah Palin, but moving in next door to her IS creepy and stalkerish - not to mention doing something that odd will diminish McGinniss' credibility.

Initially, I thought it was kind of stalkerish, too, but it's Joe McGinness and not Kitty Kelley we're talking about, so I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. Personally, however, I can't wait until we talk about Sarah Palin as often as we talk about what quality musicians those Bay City Rollers were. Hers has been a long fifteen minutes of fame and it doesn't appear to be ending any time soon.

Does it really matter who? I mean there's following a news story then there's doing so in a stalker like manner....when it becomes a pattern of behavior, it gets creepy.

What on earth is your definition of a stalker? Is it a well known and well respected journalist with no prior history of stalking? OTOH, Sarah could have 1. ignored him 2. made a friend of him, or 3. provided him with so much free publicity that everyone with a gripe against Sarah now knows where to find a best-selling author......She certainly did NOT think this through!

Maybe in his 6 month lease he will be there long enough to tell us if these two school age girls ever go to school or if a tutor comes into the house daily. Is the baby attended by someone who shows up daily? I don't care how she mows her yard I'm more interested in the care of her children. With her lack of interest in education wouldn't she have made a wonderful president? Wish she would tweet about the children's education.

I'm wondering if there's legal recourse for Mr.McGinniss.
Afterall, Palin shot and published a photo of him in the privacy of his own home - without his consent.
Or at the very least, doesn't that fall under 'invasion of privacy'?

Having said that, something tells me that Mr. McGinniss isn't terribly ruffled over this.
As a seasoned writer, he probably knew up front that he could count on the squeak toy squawking on cue - thereby performing his presale PR/promotionals for him - to a much larger market.

Sarah has yet to disappoint in today's 'slapstick stupidty.'
Afterall, she helped carve that market out.

"Right Now - Joe McGinniss talks about why he moved in next to Sarah Palin."

Just above this story you will find the above link written by conservative David Weigel for The Washington Post. It's very interesting as well as very revealing about the Paylin reaction to McGinniss renting of the house.

The funniest part tho have to be the comments following the article. Even in the face of truth from one of their own conservative side voices, the trolls were right there screaming their angry, delusional rants. Sometimes the truth hurts and her supporters are really feeling the pain.

Well, if they're in pain, it's because their heroine has given them marching orders and they lack the critical thinking ability that non-devotees of Sarah have.
