The Dirtiest Fuel on the Planet

Posted: 08/31/11 07:50 PM ET

The leaders of the top environmental groups in the country, the Republican Governor of Nebraska, and millions of people around the country -- including hundreds of people who have bravely participated in civil disobedience at the White House -- all agree on one thing: President Obama should block a planned pipeline from the tar sands of Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico.

The tar sands are the dirtiest source of fuel on the planet. As I wrote in Our Choice two years ago, gasoline made from the tar sands gives a Toyota Prius the same impact on climate as a Hummer using gasoline made from oil. This pipeline would be an enormous mistake. The answer to our climate, energy and economic challenges does not lie in burning more dirty fossil fuels -- instead, we must continue to press for much more rapid development of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and cuts in the pollution that causes global warming.

Why would anyone vote GOP?

We just don't learn, do we?  These oil companies get away with whatever they want because they own us.  We're hooked, and will do anything for oil.

Al-

I would rather we subsitute the tar sand oil from Canada with our own nat gas. Let's have trucks and buses run on USA nat gas. Maybe one day they can run on renewables but let us at least use nat gas as a bridge. Compromise a bit.

If President Obama approves this pipeline, we definitely need someone to primary him just to publicize this issue. Someone needs to step forward, someone who wants to president after Obama's second term because no one can beat Obama in 2012.

Who do I like? How about Gavin Newsome, California Attorney General?

i really hope you're being sarcastic when you're talking about obama. a monkey could beat obama in 2012. his ratings decrease by the day!

They need to build a nuke in order to generate the power needed to extract the petroleum locked in the Alberta tar sands cheaply and efficiently. Once Total accomplishes that drilling in ANWR will suddenly start looking pretty darn good.

Nuclear will be the death of life on Earth.

Look at Fukushima! The Japanese are still in denial about it.

Too bad Al!

Big Oil owns the US government because Americans are S-T-U-P-I-D !

Look there is nothing you or anyone else can do. Much of the Future misery that Americans are going to endure whether they like it or not is already, ahem, "in the pipe."

The plan is to control demand for Oil in America by controlling the level of unemployment, the unemployed have no money to buy gasoline with, you see?

Oil Prices and consequently Gasoline prices aren't going to go down (not ever), sure there will be ups and downs but the overall trend since the late 1990s have been UP. Over the next 16 - 18 months prices should double so this will further depress the US economy to the point where it becomes obvious that all this talk of "recovery" is just that "talk"

Obama, like the rest of the World is a prisoner to the Oil lobby, there is no doubt that Americans being the indoctrinated sheep that they are will never do anything about it, so sit back and enjoy the show!

Its gonna be a dooooooooozy!!!

But Al, how will there ever be enough energy to power your mansions and private jet tours? I know that struggling for relevance is costly, but here is a solution. Develop an energy generator that runs on hot air...you'll be powering the planet in no time.
10:01 AM on 09/04/2011
Gore and his cohorts are in a position where they want to make fossil fuels scarce and expensive in order to force Americans into their "alternative" energy sources....."energy prices will necessarily skyrocket"...and they don't care what happens to struggling families.
10:59 AM on 09/04/2011
Does "struggling families" include families with cancer and illness too?
11:21 AM on 09/04/2011
yup, and with their mounting medical bills the last thing they can afford is "skyrocketing" energy bills.

Today, canadian oil sands production is about 1.3 million barrels per day.

Already, toxic tailings ponds are covering 170 square kilometres.

The ponds are leaking over 11 million litres a day of contaminated water into the environment.

The residents of a town downstream from the Canadian tar sands mines have seen a 30% increase in cancer.

(Reuters) - Health officials in Alberta confirmed on Friday that there are more cases of cancer than expected in a small aboriginal village downstream from the Canadian province's massive oil sands plants.

The study found 47 individuals in the community had 51 different cancers over the 1995 to 2006 study period, more that the 39 cases health officials had expected to find.

51 cases instead of 39, it's a 30% increase.

Hey Al,

Why don't you join the Protesters in DC? Then maybe the TV media will stop their virtual blackout of the issue.
04:19 AM on 09/04/2011
I agree this pipeline, fracking and drilling in national parks/offshore are dangerous and do not benefit us economically and this administration is just about as bad as the previous one on these issues but I swear, when I read the dirtiest fuel on the planet headline, I swore you were going to talk about the hot gas that comes out of politicians when they talk.

But China is opening a new coal plant every couple of weeks - what to do about them? According to Gore, they have the right to do so. In three, or so, decades China and India will have x10 the CO2 output than will the US.

Technology from a strong co2 based economy is the answer.

Coal is dirtier than oil - even tar sands oil. So the opening premise is wrong, although not perhaps fatally wrong.

Furthermore there seems to be a widespread mistake propagated about exactly how much worse tar sands oil is compared to conventional oil. Al Gore (of all people) should not be ignoring the carbon dioxide emissions that are common to both types of oil at point of use. On that basis, the difference in overall CO2 emissions is around 20%. I find it hard to believe that the difference in emissions between a Prius and a Hummer is that small.

Wake up people carbon isn't dirty. Breathing isn't polluting. Global warming is a foregone conclusion. The cheapest energy is the best energy.
