The Professor and the Jock: Elizabeth Warren Debates Scott Brown

Posted: 09/20/2012 9:30 pm

The opening debate between Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown, candidates for the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts, at times felt like the classroom dynamic between an earnest, soft-spoken high school English teacher and the defiant jock who plants himself in the back row and makes sour faces until the bell rings. Although the teacher never quite subdued her student, neither did he manage to get the better of her.

Campaign debates are most interesting when they feature disparate leading characters. On this front Brown and Warren delivered in spades. You'd be hard-pressed to imagine what these two individuals would ever have to say to each other if they did not happen to be sharing a debate stage. One is from Venus, the other from Mars.

This fundamental difference manifested itself in the way each debater approached the other. Warren employed a two-pronged strategy: attacking her opponent's voting record and linking him to the Republican Senate. She centered her critique on Brown's political history, not his personality.

Brown, by contrast, was much more willing to get down and dirty. In his very first response of the night, the incumbent senator charged that Warren had inaccurately claimed Native American ancestry as a means of furthering her career. With this, Brown set a tone of personal aggressiveness that played out for much of the hour. During a discussion of the high cost of higher education, the senator even tut-tutted about Warren's salary and benefits package.

If Brown was hoping to rattle Warren with these barbs, no such rattling took place. From start to finish, Brown seemed a great deal more perturbed by Warren than Warren seemed perturbed by Brown. The challenger maintained her unflappability and for the most part refused the bait. In the final analysis, she came off as better prepared than her opponent, keeping him on the defensive by narrowly focusing her argument on the specifics of Brown's voting record. Brown did not appear to have an overarching strategy for the debate; Warren did.

Which is not to suggest that Warren delivered a knockout performance. She failed to connect Brown to Mitt Romney, an unpopular figure in his home state, and she waited until too late in the debate to tie Brown to his Republican colleagues. For reasons unknown, Warren chose not to take advantage of the format to directly confront her opponent. And she did not always budget her time effectively, repeating herself word for word on more than one occasion. But this was also a problem for Scott Brown, who too often felt like he was running out the clock with rote platitudes rather than treating the voters to a thoughtful discussion.

From a stylistic standpoint, Warren has a lot of work to do. She needs to master the mechanics of TV debates: how to modulate her voice, when to smile, when to play to the camera, what expression to wear while the opponent is speaking. On these matters, Brown displays far greater fluency.

But in this first of three Massachusetts senatorial debate before Election Day, Elizabeth Warren presented herself as a plausible alternative to her rival. Before they meet again on October 1st, Scott Brown would be well-advised to hit the books and study for the big exam. It's clear that the teacher at the front of the room has no intention of letting him coast.

Elizabeth Warren came to national attention because after the economic meltdown it was revealed that she'd been warning that the current regulatory structure was rigged to blow.

We need her in congress because we need someone there who can craft sensible financial regulation based on actual understanding of the financial system instead if more talking heads parroting special interest lobbyists.

That she is also awesome is bonus.

Scott tried to avoid the debate by claiming he needed to be on Washington for an all-important vote. Senator Reid delayed the vote and deprived Scott the opportunity to be recused. No wonder Scott looked pissed off, truculent, and ill-prepared during the debate. So, like any typical pissed off frat boy, he took his anger out on the person he blamed for his presence, Ms Warren. First he dumps on her about her Native American heritage, then he sneeringly called her "Professor" constantly during the debate. Has this Koch endowed, enthusiastic Wall Street supporter have a problem with intelligent women?! Very mature, Senator Brown. You are certainly not a class act.

I think I have a rich and diverse heritage and researched on ancestory.com with help of cousins and documented facts. Ancestory.com offers DNA testing but is $99 for one person. There is a long waiting list. There are rumors my husbands side there were slave owners in the family and he might have traces of African blood. DNA testing is the only way to prove it one way or another. People assumed Pres. Obama didn't descend from slaves. However, Ancestory.com researched his mothers side and found she is descended from the first African slave in America. Google it. It was on CNN and another major network. In order for Ms. Warren to prove she is Native American she would need DNA testing. That is not required by the Constitution for her to be Senator. The extra cost of testing is a financial burden not required like a filing fee to run on a State ballot. It didnt exist until decade ago. No one can know their true lineage without DNA testing. We have all taken our parents word for our heritage unless you are into genealogy. Here is an example of a woman finding about her heritage the hard way: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/19/valerie-spruill-finds-out-husband-was-father-dna-test-ohio-_n_1897448.html Think about how you learned about your heritage. Who did Brown descend from? He is Brown, though he doesn't look brown? ;)

The woman gamed the system by lying about her ethnicity and profited from the lie. Yet her supporters on the Left see nothing wrong with this, nor question the craven ambition of somebody who would take advantage of a cherished Progressive cause to level the playing field for historically underrepresented minorities, in this case Native Americans. Instead they have anointed the fraud as some kind of saint, and defend her when ever the question of her fake resume comes to light as "personal" attacks. If that's so then Romney's tax returns are merely "personal"

Scrub all the scripted debates. Warren is a consumer advocate and hates corporations. If the voters can't see that, then let them have Brown and suffer the consequences.
12:38 AM on 09/22/2012
When doing your taxes in Massachusetts you are able to volunteer to pay more than you owe in taxes...well, guess what the Fake Indian did? Yes, she DID NOT VOLUNTEER to PAY MORE in TAXES but is more than happy to take your tax money and redistribute it as she pleases. Hilarious. The hypocrisy is threw the roof with Democrats. The Democrat Creed..."Do as I say, not as I do".

I am very sad to say that tens of millions of Americans do live in STOP's world. It's a world where form is exalted over substance and Ad hominems are persuasive and not repudiated as logical fallacy. It's a frightful world where fictions have the same gravitas as facts. It is a world that, if not contained by the thoughtful segment of the electorate, will become chaotic, and probably quite violent - even in the suburbs of America.

I absolutely adore Elizabeth Warren, but she is a professor first, last and always. She is not a rousing speaker, as we witnessed at the National Convention, nor is she a particularly good debator. BUT the woman has her facts straight, knows what she is talking about and would make an incredible contribution to Congress. Heck, if Geithner is afraid of her, then we know she is on to something! We HAVE to get her into office.
08:45 AM on 09/22/2012
If she isn't a good speaker, isn't a good debater, and has an unpleasant way about her, how the heck can she make a contribution in Congress?
12:21 PM on 09/22/2012
Because she is a good speaker, is a good debater and wasn't the one who had an "unpleasant way about" them during that debate. One makes a contribution in Congress by actually knowing your stuff and actually serving the interests of the VOTERS who put you in office, and not the financial interests you're beholden to.

I have seen the future of the Democratic party and her name is Elizabeth Warren.
I like Scott Brown but Warren spanked him last night. It's a shame really because Scott Brown is a decent man, but Elizabeth Warren is that rarest of creatures: a candidate for the Senate who deserves the job.

I personally think that your claim that he's a decent man is debatable. In what world is it honest and decent to attack someone's heritage and boldly assert that she used her Native American status to get into college? And so what if she did? In my world, here in northern Ariziona, people with good minds get wonderful scholarships all the time based on their brains AND their minority status. What's the problem with that? My own husband is 1/8 Mohawk and could have received tuition assistance if he had wanted to - instead he went into the trades. There is nothing at all wrong with that... excepting in the right-wing world of divisive and dismissive snark. Scott went there and he went there first - hoping ot rattle her and throw her off her game. She didn't bite and looked more prepared and deeply more decent than he did by any measure.

The greatest asset that Ms. Warren has going for her is that she is not playing to the camera, she is not being a politcal phony... She based her discussion on facts about his record, and I was most impressed when she tied the future of the Supreme Court to the Senate. I wish she had asked him exactly what an Native American Indian is suppose to look like; I'm dying to know what he thinks... I found his comment to be insulting and bigoted.

I have this (Boston?) TV- interview seared into my memory.

Newly-elected Scott Brown once did his Republican duty and attacked Obama for “incompetent in slow handling BP oil spill.” The reporter asked him what would be his better approach.
Scott Brown said something like: I would put everyone in one room. Tell them: You do this and you do that. Then let’s do it.

What a f’king genius. I still have bad dream from seeing that clip

Dear buzzly,

I have a clear memory too. Obama rejected Dutch assistance in the oil spill. The Dutch are experts in deep water platforms, because he is a lawyer first and not an engineer!

Dear Tavote08,

You make an interesting insight. Democrats by a wide margin nominate lawyers for president. Democrats paint their party as the champion of the working class and the downtrodden, but in fact their ranks are packed with lawyers who love nothing better than legislating endless rules and regulations
Reaching all the way back to 1980, 14 of 18 Democratic nominations for president and vice president went to members of the bar.

Business men build things. By creating goods and services of value people voluntarily trade their time & money. Lawyers only know how to write regulations and sue.

I found it amusing that Scott Brown, in his attempt to show his credentials regarding women, kept repeating that he lives in a "house full of women.". Does that mean that if I own two or three dogs, I'm qualified to be a veterinarian?
If he really respected women, he would have voted for equal pay for equal work, and he would not have co-sponsored the Blunt amendment which gave employers an easy out from paying for women's health care.
As always, "actions speak louder than words."
