Cuomo, Common Core and Pearson-for-Profit

Posted: 02/28/2012 4:19 pm

It will probably take more than a billion dollars in the bank to run for President of the United States in 2016. It looks like New York State Governor is already lining up corporate support. My concern is that he will sell out the education of New York State's children to for-profit companies, particularly Pearson, to position himself for the run.

Pearson is one of the most aggressive companies seeking to profit from what they and others euphemistically call educational reform, but which teachers from groups like Rethinking Schools and FairTest see as an effort to sell, sell, sell substandard remedial education programs seamlessly aligned with the high stakes standardized tests for students and teacher assessments they are also selling. Pearson reported revenues of approximately $9 billion in 2010 and generated approximately $3 billion on just digital revenues in 2011.

If it has its way, Pearson will soon be determining what gets taught in schools across the United States with little or no parental or educational oversight. Pearson standardized exams will assess how well teachers implement Pearson instruction modules and Pearson's common core standards, but not what students really learn or whether students are actually learning things that are important to know. Pearson is already creating teacher certification exams for eighteen states including New York, organizing staff development workshops to promote Pearson products, and providing school district Pearson assessment tools. In New York, Pearson Education currently has a five-year, $32 million contract to administer state test and provides other "testing services" to the State Education Department. It also recently received a share of a federal Race to the Top grant to create what the company calls the "next-generation" of online assessments.

Pearson, which claims to be the "world's leading learning company," is in the process of designing mind-numbing "multimedia textbooks... designed for pre-schoolers, school students and learners of all ages" for use on Apple's iPad so school systems will have more products to purchase instead of investing in quality teaching and instruction. In case you are not already worried about children seating dazed in front of computer screens for hours on end, Pearson promises its "respected learning content" will be "brought to life with video, audio, assessment, interactive images and 3D animations."

According to the New York Times, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is "investigating whether the Pearson Foundation, the nonprofit arm of one of the nation's largest educational publishers, acted improperly to influence state education officials by paying for overseas trips and other perks." Since 2008, state education officials have been treated to trips to London, Helsinki, Finland, Singapore, and Rio de Janeiro.

From February 9-11, Pearson organized a National Summit in Orlando, Florida to promote its concept of "Best Practices in School Improvement" and to sell its programs for integrating Common Core State Standards into curriculum, instruction and assessment. These include providing "struggling and successful schools alike with professional development and consultative services that have helped their leaders transform instruction in the classroom and raise students' achievement levels." The company brags that senior America's Choice fellows Sally Hampton and Phil Daro, employees of a Pearson sub-division, "not only led the development of the Common Core Standards, but also helped design Pearson's CCSS services, helping us tailor our professional development, district level consultative services, job-embedded coaching, learning teams for building capacity, and even whole school CCSS implementation services in order to meet your specific needs and interests as you align curriculum content and practices to the standards."

In September, Pearson cemented its ties with the New York State governor and the State Education Department when David Wakelyn was appointed Deputy Secretary for Education. Governor Cuomo claimed "With his extensive experience in improving the performance of schools all across the nation, David Wakelyn is the right person to help turn around our schools. He is an expert in state policy for education, and together we will deliver results for students and families in New York." However, Wakelyn's resume shows that after briefly working as a teacher as part of the Teach for America program, he moved into educational policy and decision making, primarily as a Senior Associate for America's Choice School Design, which is now a leading Pearson sub-division.

Of course, Wakelyn is not the only corporate representative to move into a government position where they can sell products produced by their former (and future?) employer. Karen Cator, the Director of the federal Department of Education 's educational technology section previously was an executive at Apple Computers for eight years.

why would anyody think about making profits out of school? school should only be educational for the children not something that you can make money out of.By doing that what really are we teaching the kids of our and the next generation ?

I personally believe that having all of these electronic devices inside schools is not going to turn out good. I think that they're just doing this for a profit and how it benefits them but not thinking about how It's going to effect people. By having all of these electronic devices kids are going to even give a little effort on their work they're just going to go to the internet for the answers

its ridiculous and sad that they plan on selling chldren's education for money and profit. I think they will actually do it. it is socking how they will soon be choosing what gets taught around the schools throughout the country and the fact that they have a contract to administer state test only makes school look and feel more like a business. It makes me not want to take this school system seriously. incorporating ipads into our methods of learning doent help either. It makes things worse because it just distracts us. Its bad enough that computers in my school tempt us to use the internet for other purposes than our work but an ipad has apps and other features that will make it harder for students to get their work done. More people should be exposed to this plan especially more parents because no one should be proud with the fact that school isnt focused more on education simply becoming a business.

What would be the best way to stop this evil company? A decentralized locally controlled education system funded and operated by the local community?

Thank you for this post. The privatization of public education is the undoing of a foundation of participatory democracy. The voices of parents, educators, community members and students should be the ones discussing, debating and making choices about education-not corporate profiteers only interested in the bottom line. This is a crucial point, we are giving away the house. But--there are small resistances that need to be attended to and supported. I am a teacher educator in one of the states where Pearson is making a deep incursion into teacher education through the Teacher Performance Assessment. My students--alert to the dangers of privatization-have chosen to opt out of the field test of this product for Pearson. The scary thing is--throughout the country teacher educators are being silenced or are willingly compliant with this corporate take over of our work. Listen to this radio program for a story of resistance--and stand up and fight back:

It's like I always say. Anything you can find on the streets, you can find in our government. The politicians are like prostitutes while Corporations are the pimps.

I don't even know what to say or even go about on how we can even make a rebuttal or conjure up some sort of resistance against privatizing the educational public system. We just need to be informed on a regular basis about what is occurring and it's up to us to teach ourselves because ironically they're not going to do for us. We're doing their job for them

I personally believe technology has ruined our generation and the next generations to come. Pretty soon we wont need libraries we will have books at the touch of a finger. Technology is starting to make people very lazy and not letting people do things the old fashion way. I don't mind doing research then "regular way" going to to a library sitting down and looking. I'am not against technology because i own i few gadgets myself but what i'm saying is it shouldn't be used daily, especially in schools because students will start to depend on computers and will start getting lazy. Corporations obviously wouldn't even care about how technology affects us because all they care about are gaining profits that's what its all about. Money is everything these days and if you don't have that your out of the picture. Technology has its pros and cons but as of these times it is being overly exposed !

Pearson i'sent doing this just souly for the love of our children or for the love of education. This has become more of a game to these Corporations and corporate representatives one that is very similar game all Americans now known as the lotto. The only difference is that they get the winning ticket all the time. What i'm trying to say is that the main goal here for these people is to make money not to make our children scholars or anything that really has to do with education. To them if there's no profit involved then it is to no concern to them witch is sad because there is just no way you can compare true education and experience by selling students test.

Public education has changed in so many ways over past years. As technology advances arise, I believe that we should still keep our traditional old customs. Technology shouldn't be used everywhere in school because then the students will get accustomed to having technology around 24/7 to do work for them. Technology is becoming a resource that is being overly used in unnecessary environments, such as Schools. However, corporations like Pearson are gaining profit from this.

Government positions are quickly beginning to fill up with corporate representatives. The individuals whom control our government are no longer doing it for the love of the country, but for the money in their pocket. These people can care less what improvements are done to society- as long as they profit. Deputy Secretary for Education David Wakelyn once worked for Pearson, a major corporation that now controls a big part of the educational system in the country. Pearson is a for-profit organization looking to make money from educational reforms. Unfortunately, this company only focuses on selling standardized tests and teacher assessments, not whether the students are learning from any of it. Pearson just wants to sell their products and programs, and the country is allowing it. They now control a huge part of our educational system; a system created for the advancement of learning- Pearson can care less about the lack of learning going on. According to Cuomo, David Wakelyn is an “expert in state policy”- yet, we need individuals who know how to teach to control our educational reforms instead of people who are only there to enforce policies and make money. Education needs to be more than just corporations trying to sell us assessments.

I think using more technology for schools isn't such a good idea beacause all its really going to do is make the future generations really lazy. You won't get real education because your not working as hard as you would be if you did it yourself. Of course people would want to have more technology school, to be honest I wouldn't mind having I pads in school but I don't want it for education purposes. I feel other students would feel the same. Its also upsetting to see that people in charge of our education dont really care abou it. Its mainly about money and how they are benefiting from it. Im all for bettering our education but in my opinion in order to do that you cant look at it from a having more money perspective but for what will truly help.
09:44 AM on 03/15/2012
Wow, it is crazy how selfish these people are. They can care less about our education they can care less about whats going on. As long as the money is being handed in, the world is a beautifulplace to them. The education system is becoming more disorderly by the day.
11:23 PM on 03/14/2012
It's ridiculous that you would sell out children education for a profit company because you want to be president. Pearson is trying to be a modern day educational system that corporations and benefit from.

For the past the technology has been increasing more then ever. I truly believe that has the years pass technology is going to be a way of living. Technology just makes us slower then what it already has made us. Our knowledge has to come from us not from something that just giving us an answer for everything . I feel like that students should be using more books then anything because thats how you get educated by working hard and actually working not going online and lookiing for something. They just want more money in their pockets and make our knowledge decrease more so us minorities woon't make it to even finish college. Not even college because that is allready happening now. _Alexandra Mateo pd3
