Obama's Educational Report Card Grade Is F

Posted: 12/14/11 12:09 PM ET

In a recent 60 Minutes interview, President Obama told Americans, "Don't judge me against the Almighty; judge me against the alternative." While he was referring to the potential Republican candidates in the 2012 election campaign, there is another way to interpret the phrase and to evaluate the Obama Presidency. What alternative programs could the Obama Administration have implemented if it was less committed to compromise and willing to fight harder for principles? In education, Obama had many alternatives. Obama could have studied harder; he could have been more creative; he could have played better with teachers, parents, children, and public schools; and he could have offered onto other people's children the kind of education he demanded for his own. He could have resisted turning the keys to the Treasury over to well-connected edu-companies. Based on his first three years in office, the Obama Educational Report Card Grade is a very disappointing "F" for failure. If he was a New York City high school, Mayor Bloomberg would be pushing to close him down.

Obama's educational plan not only fails according to my standards, but worse, it fails according to his own. On March 28, 2011, the president told a town hall meeting at Bell Multicultural High School in Washington DC that when schools are "just teaching the test... you're not learning about the world, you're not learning about different cultures, you're not learning about science, you're not learning about math. All you're learning about is how to fill out a little bubble on an exam and little tricks that you need to do in order to take a test and that's not going to make education interesting." At least according to this statement, Obama values an education that promotes historical, cultural, scientific, and mathematical literacy, an education that examines the world, rather than one that just prepares students to perform on high-stakes standardized multiple choice tests.

Some of President Obama's strongest supporters from 2008 are apparently disillusioned up with his educational performance as well. Linda Darling-Hammond is a professor of Education at Stanford University and was an educational adviser to Obama's initial campaign and to the transition team after he was elected. Personally and professionally, I thought she was an excellent candidate for Secretary of Education, however Obama gave the position to Arne Duncan, his friend from Chicago and the basketball courts. Duncan, someone without any educational background, has been the major champion of Obama's signature program Race to the Top.

In a recent op-ed piece in The New York Times that she co-authored, Hammond protested against No Child Left Behind mandates still being enforced by the Obama Administration. She complained that "dictates from Congress turn into gobbledygook as they travel from the Education Department to state education agencies and then to local school districts. Educators end up caught in a morass of prescriptions and prohibitions, bled of the initiative and energy that characterize effective schools." Hammond believes that "voluntary, competitive federal grants that support innovation" such as Race to the Top promised might have promoted school reform, however "it ended up demanding that winning states hire consultants to comply with a 19-point federal agenda, rather than truly innovate."

While I have great respect for Darling-Hammond, I think she pulls her punches and the Obama record is actually much worse. One area of potential promise that in the end proved to be a disaster for education is the Obama Administration's caving to private companies misusing educational programs to maximize profits. Essentially these companies are recruiting unqualified students and using their eligibility for federal student loans to steal tax payer money. The Obama administration vowed to stop the for-profit edu-companies from luring students with false promises about the quality of their programs and the potential for future employment. The Education Department threatened to cut off student aid funds that feed the 30 billion dollar industry. However, after a massive lobbying effort, the teeth were pulled from the new regulations.

According to The New York Times, the for-profit edu-companies "spent more than $16 million on an all-star list of prominent figures, particularly Democrats with close ties to the White House, to plot strategy, mend their battered image and plead their case." Democrats on their payroll included Anita Dunn, a close friend of President Obama and his former White House communications director, Jamie Rubin, a major fund-raising bundler for the president's re-election campaign, Richard Gephardt, the former House majority leader; John Breaux, a former Senator from Louisiana senator; and Tony Podesta, whose brother headed Obama's 2008 transition team. In addition, the chief executive of the company that Kaplan and the founder of the University of Phoenix have close ties to Democratic party leaders, including House minority leader Nancy Pelosi.

Another recent New York Times article documented the way the for-profit edu-companies, including the massive Pearson publishing concern, go unregulated by federal education officials. These companies operate online charter schools that offer substandard education to desperate families at public expense. One online program, Agora, made $72 million this school year for its parent company K12, the biggest player in the online-school business.

Although I had doubts in 2008, I voted for Barack Obama largely because high school students and teachers I worked with in New York City and suburban minority communities believed in his message of hope. They would have been disappointed in me if I did not share their hopes for a better future. But based on his school performance I am unlikely to vote for Obama again, no matter the alternative.

One option I am exploring is the Green Party candidacy of Jill Stein for President. I know Stein will not be elected, but at least Stein and the Greens are discussing the major educational issues and introducing real alternatives. If Stein can get into the televised Presidential debates in the fall, maybe Obama and his Republican opponent will be forced to respond.

According to their party platform, "Greens believe every child deserves a public education that fosters critical and holistic thought, and provides the breadth and depth of learning necessary to become an active citizen and a constructive member of our society." This idea sounds like something Obama might believe in, but unfortunately it was not part of his Race to the Top program.

The Greens are "strongly opposed to the dissolution of public schools and the privatization of education" and "believe that the best educational experience is guaranteed by the democratic empowerment of organized students, their parents and communities along with organized teachers." Specifically, they want to "eliminate gross inequalities in school funding," they "oppose the administration of public schools by private, for-profit entities," and they want to provide "free college tuition to all qualified students at public universities and vocational schools."

These all sound like good ideas to me. The Greens may not represent the "Almighty," but they do offer an actual alternative to Obama's failed policies and the no-choice entrepreneurial programs being pushed by the Republican candidates.

This article is upsetting, the fact that we put our hopes on obmama to be a better president on the promises of change when he can't see that hiring a person with experience and the the will to do something about the schools. The schools don't teach kids useful information as it is they teach info that gets students by.

It’s sad to know that we believe and had faith in Obama’s promises and he’s not even on our side to begin with his promises and better education. It looks like he is not a man of his word; we have to fight for our rights on our own.

This article really upset me why ? because we would have all thought that Obama would be on our side , All the promises that he made for us are GONE ! But if we don't fight for our rights , who's going to do it for us ? Nobody that's why we gotta stay strong and keep do our best in school because Obama has totally lied about better education , teachers just do what there told to do and at the end of the day they get paid and leave , but what about the student what do we learn if teacher only teach us what they want us to learn , why don't they teach us what's happening around the world ?

At the beginning of his presidency,Obama advertised himself really well which makes him a great marketer rather than a leader. He reached his goal to be the president with the help of our votes but in return didn't do anything to improve the education system.

The direction public education really does seem quite bad doesn't it? Although the Green party seems to have well thought out proposals the question is, will they really pull through with it? They could be like the Republicans going one way at first then doing an about face in the other direction for the sake of profit.

The underlining concept of the word change is assorted of a range of meanings to many people, yet the word itself is simple.
During the 2008 election we the American people were fascinated with a fresh face, that legitimated change literally among the white house, and to whom was throwing an appealing and pleasing promise of change. The overall enthusiasm and display of this change that was promised leaked urgency. But in all reality, this fast ball known as change was nothing short of slow. An individual with common sense would have known that like, trying to mold and shape a person whom has broken into their awful ways, the result of change takes time.
When examined closely, the blunt idea of why Obama's educational report card was a failure would be because of the relevance of our education, opposed to our country and governmental issues. Indeed is it astonishing to witness that the education of the future people of this country can be ignored, in a way. Although, in the defense of President Barack Obama upon the inherited economic issues that he was left to deal with when entering his presidency, I can in so many insufficient ways understand why he could not devise an efficient, prosperous plan regarding the educational system. A hypothesis of mine that justifies the devastation of the lack of change would be, if Barack Hussein Obama had more time and less of a surplus of dilemmas, then change would have been accomplished and seen.

Not only did obama promise us a lot of things that were close to perfect but he also promised a better education. His way of an education is not as great as we thought, with an F as a grade it just comes to show he is not a man of his words. It's actually rather disappointing to know that the president is not doing his job very well. He is filling peoples minds with things we want to hear, but what are we really getting out of it? in this case nothing. I understand some of the students are not doing their part in the education by failing classes, but its not always our fault we are the ones who are being lied to.

I agree with Steven1904... Obama has done nothing but tell us what we want to here. He sounds very persuasive but the end of the day he does not do much for us. He just believe in the 1% percent because those are the people with the extra zeros before the decimal. What I ment is that they're only helping the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This society is based on power, money and ignorance. We have to unite to reconsider our government. Fear nothing, dont be afraid to question, we live in a devastating world.

I do understand that he is a human being and that he cannot support everyone and everything.. but it is not fair that we are basically being lied to. For example, since he became president he would always talk about the changes he is going to make, but til this day i see no "change". id rather be told the truth than lied to over and over again. I am against the education system, i despise the way it works. However, when president obama became president , many believed that since he is black, change was going to be made. i must not lie and say i didnt believe that also. in fact i was very excited and anxious for the "change" that was basically promised to us. in my opinion, Education should be obamas main priority. - Gasiel capellan, junior.

what obama is bascailly doing is telling people what they want to do and not commiting to do what hes promises. i dont belive in anything he says or wants to do at this point beacuse hes all full of nothing. people should just try to make things change and not brian washed by the bs that anyone says.

What Obama is doing is basecally just playing with words. What i mean by this is simple he puts a whole bunch of words and sentences that people want to hear and then makes a speech out of it and boom magic. The only problem with this magician is that he revealed his secrets and got caught in his own web of lies. But we the mass are to silent and still to actually make some difference and Obama does not care simple as that if it aint his family why should he that should be his modoe. This is a selfish world full of ignorant people not only is Obama and the 1% ignorant but are so are we the mass cause we wait to long. We have to get up and fight for a better education cause at the end of the day Obama just wants his votes and along with the 1% he got money. Actions speak louder than words people and its about that that time lets stop leaving things for the last minute because they don't care about the poor i mean there money is making money wile our money making nothing.

All Obama is doing is letting you hear what you want. He's full of empty promises. My school they don't prepare you for the real world. They sit and minipulate those who are afraid to speak out. There preparing us? I think I have a better chance learning from whats going on outside my window.

Change takes time. Nothing can happen over night. Yeah three years sounds like a lot of time but its not. Obama is trying to change something that has been around for way longer than three years. He's just one person if you want change you need to take action yourself , you cant sit and wait for someone to do it for you.

Obama so call cares about the students; and them getting a good education. Ofcourse its going to sound great when he says multiple choice test's are a waist of time because it doesnt have science, social studies, math or english. Thats what people want to hear from him, they want to believe thay Obama really cares about the students; so with giving the people what they want to hear, he'll receive more votes. Simple as that; tell the people what they want to hear and ill be president for another 4 years doesnt mean he actually means what he says. He doesnt care about the americans he just cares about hiself and his family; ignorance is a big thing now in the United States. Just forget about the poor and their education, right ?
