More Things I Would Do If I Were President

Whether it be college or university, undergrad or doctorate, medical school or trade school, this country desperately needs to provide the funds required for those who cannot pay for school.

The second thing I would do would be to cut the budget of the US
government by .75% each year in the first term. That would amount to
slightly over 3%, totaling roughly $85 billion, according to the 2007
budget figures. We all know that there is unconscionable waste in
government. Members of every department, agency and office would be
directed to facilitate those cuts and no branch of government would be
spared.

The third thing I would then do is spend that $85 billion by offering
a free college education to every qualified American who wanted one.

In America, thousands upon thousands of hard working people scrimp and
save in order to give themselves an education or form of training. They
enter the workplace deeply in debt. Meanwhile, others from more
affluent backgrounds use money and influence to buy their way into fine
schools, whether they belong there or not. Some of those people even go
on to become president. America is struggling academically. Many people
who would make fine students, who would excel in school and who would
make important contributions to our society have little or no hope of
funding their dreams.

Qualified people would necessarily have to apply for such a program.
But how many scholarships do you think $85 billion would buy?
