Street Style: Pretty Young Things in Manhattan's Spring (PHOTOS)

What's Your Reaction:

The most gorgeous days are upon us.

The lounging days of spring, as we dust off our cobwebs and take to the streets of New York to shop. A bevy of Brazilian girls did just that, swinging their Louboutins and giggling down Bleecker Street. Rick Owens once again hits my gallery and at a rooftop event for MCM a new bag is unveiled.

I can't help but pop into the Apple Store in the Meatpacking district to finally touch the hallowed iPad, but geeks don't dress up. I finally found a dapper couple. Crafting his own perfect red sweater is a young man on Broadway. Two Dutch girls love shopping at Barney's and clutch Balenciaga. The dog-loving girl is proud of her rabbit lined jacket, which she dug out of her closet after buying it five years ago.

Yes, things indeed.

Lousy pictures, shatty clothes, and typically misguided "fashionable" thang in a fur. Which is always ugly.

Nothing speaks style here.

Carrying a Balenciaga bag does not style make. Where's the style here? I suggest you check out the real thing at thesartorialist.blogspot.com.

I completely and totally agree. The Sartorialist has by far the finest style eye on Earth today.

"A girl with a rabbit lined coat, holding her dog in the Meatpacking District" ?????

Shame on her! What did those bunnies do to be treated so mean? She's willing to kill bunnies for a coat but considers herself an animal lover?

And shame on whoever included her picture...not my idea of style or pretty.

Beyond the too cute and too stylish brazillian girls it would seem the only thing we agree on in that title is "young". Blech!

Totally underwhelming.

Hey I put those outfits in Goodwill! Good thing, they're ugly.
10:57 AM on 04/06/2010
Ooh,edgy.

Do all the pretty "things" in Manhattan have white or light skin?
11:16 AM on 04/06/2010
I noticed that too.

Disgusting racism.

yeah. maybe there would have been more interesting fashion choices in harlem and BK? where are all the beautiful latina chicks with the bright colors and staggering heels? and my chocolate chicks with awesome hair and swagger making fashion out fifteen cents? and my asian chicks with their well-tailored looks? basically where's the NY I know and love?

Thanks for the note, I really do try for a spectrum, it's just what I see at the time, there is no slight or bent or take on race here. It's just clothes. Also, I am not going to Harlem with a crazy expensive camera, I'm just not. BK was off my beaten path when doing this gallery.

When i approach people. Most Asian women do not want their picture taken.

Um....what's happening to HuffPo's - they went from headlines that were misleading to headlines that are kinda - well - yeah - creepy. Gotta agree with others here. Creepy headline.

Kinda creepy headline. Has a dirty old man ring to it. As my dad would tell young women who ask about modeling, "Never trust photographers." (He was a pro in LA in the '70s.)

LOL. :-) "Pretty Young Things" comes from Tom Wolfe - Vanity Fair uses it on a regular basis. I mean it more in the sense of - look at them, they're amazing.
10:01 AM on 04/06/2010
Thanks for the schoolin' Alex! Aside from "Acid Test" and "Radical Chic", I've not much trod the trail of the Wolfe. I hope to explore those woods yet.

(And following in my dad's footsteps late in life, I find myself photographing the "pretty young things" on my downtown streets. As I've said, anyone who hates summer in the South has never seen a young woman in a clingy sun dress and sandals. So maybe I was projecting with regard to your headline!)

It's also a Micheal Jackson song. That's what went through my head when I saw the headline and I'm not even a fan.

Heart Attack and Vine (Excerpt)
By Screamin’ Jay Hawkins
(As performed by Tom Waits)

See that little Jersey girl in the see-through top
With the pedal pushers, sucking on a lolly-pop
Well I bet she's still a virgin but it's only twenty-five 'til nine
You can see a million of 'em on Heart attack and Vine

Tom Waits wrote it and Hawkins covered it. According to Waits, it was inspired by an incident when he was in a bar at Hollywood and Vine one afternoon and a bag lady stumbled in from the heat complaining of having a heart attack and the bartender told her to take it outside.

only the top three are noteworthy as being fashionable. the rest are just run-of-the-mill hipsters. dime a dozen
