Police Experiment With New Weapon on Protesters During G-20

What's Your Reaction?

Pittsburgh police demonstrated the latest in crowd control techniques on protesters when they used "sound cannons" to blast the ears of citizens near the G-20 meeting of world economic leaders. City officials said this was the first time such sound blasters, also known as "sound weapons," were used publicly.

Lavonnie Bickerstaff of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police uses benign language like "sound amplifiers," and "long-range acoustic device" to explain the new weapons in an attempt to sanitize what is essentially a painful weapon that leaves no visible marks on its victims. The mob utilized a similar tactic on snitches when they would beat everywhere except the face. If victims have no outward bruises to show, the world is less likely to believe their stories of assault and harassment.

Unlike aerosol hand-grenades, pepper spray, and rubber bullets (all traditional methods of protest suppression also used at the G-20 protests) the damage from sound cannons is entirely internal, and can only be preserved on video, but even then, the deafening noise cannot be fully appreciated unless one hears it in person.

(Footage of the sound cannons in action can be seen/heard below. It's clear from these videos that the extremely loud, high-pitched noise causes pain.)

The "long range acoustic device (LRAD)" is designed for long-range communication and acts as an "unmistakable warning," according to the American Technology Corporation (ATC,) which develops the instruments. "The LRAD basically is the ability to communicate clearly from 300 meters to 3 kilometers," (nearly 2 miles) said Robert Putnam of American Technology's media and investor relations during an interview with MSNBC. "It's a focused output. What distinguishes it from other communications tools out there is its ability to be heard clearly and intelligibly at a distance, unlike bullhorns."

Except, police aren't trying to send a distress call to allies two miles away. They're literally blasting this extreme decibel of noise directly into the ears of protesters (or any unwitting citizens) standing mere feet from the cannons. Depending on the mode of LRAD, it can blast a maximum sound of 145 to 151 decibels -- equal to a gunshot -- within a three-foot (one meter) range, according to ATC. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that permanent hearing loss can result from sounds at about 110 to 120 decibels in short bursts or even just 75 decibels if exposure lasts for long periods.

But there is a volume knob, Putnam notes, so its output can be less than max, purportedly to give us comfort in the knowledge that deafening citizens is left to the discretion of power-hungry police. On the decibel scale, an increase of 10 (say, from 70 to 80) means that a sound is 10 times more intense. Normal traffic noise can reach 85 decibels, reports MSNBC, but these sound cannons cannot be compared to standing beside a busy New York City road.

The BBC reported in 2005 that the "shrill sound of an LRAD at its loudest sounds something like a domestic smoke alarm, ATC says, but at 150 decibels, it is the aural equivalent to standing 30 m away from a roaring jet engine and can cause major hearing damage if misused."

This technology has been deployed in Iraq as an "anti-insurgent weapon," and the sonic weaponry is also being used on protesters in Honduras. Seattle Weekly reports that this weapon could easily be used as a torture tool if one doesn't already think this is its only use.

Sonic weaponry is now being deployed domestically to put a chill on free speech. We're told this is the "humane" way to deal with protesters, but it's really just a convenient way to suppress citizens without the messy aftereffects of having to explain bullet holes to reporters. A bunch of protesters complaining about ruptured ear drums doesn't make for dramatic news.

Is it Kent State? No
Are the devices used the same military grade that has the habit of cooking skin or boiling blood a 100 yards away? No

I'll take loud decibels as a deterrent any day of the week. With this type of crowd dispersal technology at their disposal protesters will now bring ear plugs. The same with a vinegar soaked rag to prepare against tear gas. I'd rather prepare for a protest with optional clothing accessories than hoping my crossed arms will protect against riot batons, rubber bullets, or a charging horse.

How do the police protect their own hearing ?

I'm disgusted and deeply disturbed by these videos. Thank you to the brave individuals who had the courage to film and post them. These types of 'small squad tactics' are being trained and practiced by police departments all over the county. They are designed to harass, intimidate, and punish. I'm embarrassed and ashamed of the police officers who participate in this type of thuggery. These officers all swore and oath to protect the constitution and then find it easy and convenient to violate that same constitution in their zeal. History repeats itself and it is perpetrated by those who found history boring. Their actions can be rationalized all day long, but the fact remains that these are identical tactics used to disrupt and eliminate opposition by every totalitatian government around the world.
To my marine corps friend below: the fact that these tactics worked, doesn't justify their implementation. And a lot of people did get hurt, all over Pittsburgh, every day.

The police missuse weapons like tazers and tear gas and billy clubs all the time.
they rarely get arrested and people can sue thats why citys ahave sky high insurance it pays out
for rights violations all the time.
If a citizen did what the police do they would get locked up.

our rights including the right of assembly are not absolute. We can't demand to assemble in the oval office regardless of how peaceful we would be once we got there. The police have the responsibility to defend the G20 and part of that defence is distance. Even if the protesters start off being peaceable should they turn violent the police have the amount of time to bring in reinforcements as it takes for the crowd to advance to the point where they threaten the world leaders. Pushing the crowd back brings them more time.
To accomplish this goal the police use a variety of methods including the intimidation we see in the second video. As we can see it worked, the police were all dressed the same, they all stepped forward the same and they hit their shields in unison and the crowd backed up. The prostesters clearly disagree with the police but no one was harmed.

Um, isn't this type of technology used to torture...? Lovely. They're sure showing us, aren't they.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've actually been shot at by rubber bullets and pepper spray because of other morons actions. I can promise that nothing I say can explain how terrible it is to be shot with a rubber bullet while you can't see or breath, and your entire face is on fire. Personally, I would have much rather got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time when police were using this.

Neither rubber bullets and teargas nor sonic weapons are an acceptable means of handling peaceful demonstrations. As I see, every cop in those videos is a traitor to his nation and deserves no less than the death penalty for their actions.

Capitalism Inc. doesn't want images of angry Americans protesting a G20 summit held on the home soil of big business. But over-reactions to legitimate dissent don't discourge it. They fuel it. Tienanmen Square, Kent State, the anti-Vietnam War protests in Washington. We can only hope the high pitched sound cannons ruined the plans to bake Grand Marnier souffles for the dinner dessert menu.

Please, don't compare idiots who are protesting for anarchy against capitalism by wearing black and smashing windows (but not actually doing anything to change the situation, by offering something other than anarchy) to what happened in Tiananmen square, thousands were killed, did you stand in front of an F'n tank? just to have a tenth of the freedom you have now? Keep protesting if you mean it, I think there is something to be said, don't complain when it gets hard, because fighting for your rights ain't easy. Bleeding eardrums, really? and you say that is just like what China did? I don't want anarchy, but if it's something you believe in then fight for it, don't cry about how hard it is, because it ain't hard yet...

You mean if the British just used loud uncomfortable noises, instead of shooting and killing people? I don't think we would have had a revolution, because nobody would have cared, we would still be British and Lexington and Concord would be tiny quaint British villages that nobody has ever heard of. That would suck. Thank god for real bullets.

It is becoming more and more clear that the Constitution is no longer the governing document of the United States. Both Bush and Obama have made a mockery of it.

Protesters should now wear very thick ear muffs and ear plugs.
