With the second and third round picks, Bills fans and pundits were tweeting, hoping and speculating that the team would actually start addressing its top needs. But -- always a team to rumble to the beat of their own little buffalo hooves -- the Bills went ahead and drafted themselves a defensive tackle and defensive end.
Well, that's... cool. But umm, didn't we trade for some defensive lineman earlier in the offseason? Isn't the defense kind of one of the only things we have put together?!
Ok, to be fair, they scooped Torell Troup of Central Florida to fill position of nose tackle, something we did need to help pull off the new 3-4 formation. So I guess kudos to addressing a need I'm gonna go ahead and call slight. But then we got Alex Carrington of Arkansas State at defensive end and the puzzlement returns. I know a lot of the good picks were falling off the board but I mean, really? There wasn't any non-defensive position they could have gone for? I find that hard to believe.
Let's give 'em some props: apparently Troup improved a ton since freshman year, slimming down by nearly 35 pounds and rarely seen on the bench. The Bills think he'll work well with Kyle Williams, who emerged as fairly useful last year. Carrington broke all these records for sacks at Arkansas and was supposedly seen by some scouting services as one of the best picks at his position. He's being called an "underrated add" to our lineup, so I'll give him a chance to prove himself.
The Bills draft, thus far, is exactly why I don't waste my time getting excited. Because I'd be promptly disappointed. According to Chris Brown of buffalobills.com, the Bills may finally be looking at some OTs and a QB... but I won't hold my breath.
Ranting aside, I do welcome Troup and Carrington to our big happy dysfunctional Bills family. You've got to hand it to these guys: they're rearin' to go and excited as ever to be a Bill and that's half the battle.
GO BILLS!!!
