Books To Inspire Your Startup

Posted: 09/15/11 01:17 PM ET

As entrepreneurs, we look for inspiration, advice, and instruction everywhere. We find that we can learn and adapt something from every business we encounter. Given that our business, In Good Company, was a first-of-its-kind community, learning center, and co-working space, we knew we had a lot to learn. In addition to our peers, key industry magazines, and increasingly, social media, books have been important teachers. A good book challenges your thinking and encourages you to try something new or do things differently. Here are a handful of the books that inspired, improved, and influenced our business, our growth, and our own book, "The Big Enough Company: Creating a Business that Works for You."

"Alpha Dogs: How Your Small Business Can Become a Leader of the Pack" by Donna Fenn

We love learning from others success. And "Alpha Dogs" is packed with critical information, gleaned from real entrepreneurs' stories, about how to make your small business stand out from the competition. It's amazing to see the business behind some of the well-known and loved brands included, such as Thor-lo, Amy's Ice Cream, and Dancing Deer Baking Company (also featured in The Big Enough Company). All of these businesses operated with integrity and purpose, and give you the inspiration to be the best you can be.

One of my favorite startup books is Insanely Great by Steve Levy. Its the story of the very early days of Apple. Informative and a very fun and inspiring read.
