Memo to all progressives, activists, eco-warriors and Lefty paradigm shifters: I get it, I get it. Obama is a wimp. The Senate is completely dysfunctional, and your congressperson isn't doing nearly enough. Right. Check. Now get over yourselves and vote.

I agree that the stimulus bill should have been much larger and financial reform much stronger. Yes, Democrats have shown a troubling lack of political will, and have not heeded their base on many important issues. But do you really think this will get better if Republicans gain seats in Congress this November? Are you willing to sit back and let that happen?

The standard-issue excuse that "there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans, so why bother?" just doesn't cut it this year. It is not a question of Democrat versus Republican in this election, it is a choice between those who are capable of governing at all, versus those who are not. Today's right-wing candidates make no bones about it: they would happily cede the entire act of governing to the likes of Charles and David Koch's favorite charities.

That is how bad things are in this country right now. And it is never, ever a reason to stop exercising your right to vote. In college in the 1980s, my activist friends and I were horrified at how ineffectual the Democratic candidates for president were. But every election we would jokingly call ourselves "Anarchists for Mondale," or "Anarchists for Dukakis," and would get our radical behinds down to the polls and vote.

Here in California, this election is even more critical than usual. Our state government is broken, our roads and schools are crumbling, and the economy sucks. But if you thought things got worse on Schwarzenegger's watch, just wait till Meg Whitman, the $100 million Stepford candidate, buys her way into the governor's office. Do you really want to experience what will happen as she auctions off the rest of the state to corporate bidders? Will that forward your principles in some way?

I lived here under Governor Moonbeam. I can't say I'm a big fan. But Jerry Brown cares about governing, and understands how to get an economy working. So does Senator Barbara Boxer, battling yet another candidate financed by her private fortune, who can't even run a business let alone a government. If you care about the environment and want to keep our beaches free of oil for your children and grandchildren, why on earth would you risk displacing Barbara Boxer for an utter disaster like Carly Fiorina? Why even take that chance?

Other Huffington Post bloggers have written in much greater detail about why this election is important. But here's the thing: if you choose to sit this one out and the Democrats lose control of Congress, you probably don't want to hit me up for a contribution anytime soon. Even if you catch me with some change in my pocket coming out of Whole Foods and ask for a donation to your pet cause, my first question will be, "Did you vote in the midterms?"

If the answer is no, count me out as a supporter. Because no matter how important your issue is, it is small change compared to what we are challenged with right now as a nation. By choosing apathy over engagement this November, you will be making all of our efforts way more difficult, and in the process demonstrating how incomplete your grasp is of the big picture. In that context, how can anyone take you or your activism seriously?

So what are Brown's specific ideas on how to bring back jobs to CA? All I have seen from him is "CA will bounce back". Whitman lacks G experience but she has put forth specific ideas.

Whitman is a big money corporatist. Her spending on this election is shameful.

I will be interviewing blogger and political theorist Gus DiZerega tomorrow (Thurs 9/16) morning on my Dream Talk Radio show. Gus knew Charles Koch as a young man, and was quoted several times in Jane Mayer's New Yorker piece on the Koch brothers—the one I link to in this Huffington Post article.

Gus and I will be talking about this article, the current political landscape as he sees it, and progressive politics in general. Dream Talk Radio airs 9-10 am Pacific time on KOWS 107.3 fm, streaming live on the web at http://bit.ly/aLc9Ge We will be taking (respectful, civil) callers at 707-874-1073, as well.

Anne this is my first day on the HF. I just wanted to say hi. I enjoyed your article. I'm extremely conservative but open for dialog. I'm actually hesitant to state my position but everyone has been very friendly and encouraging so far. I have two fans on HF - not to bad for my position for one day. My real objective to contacting you was to make friends with a heavy hitting liberal progressive. I hope you take the time to entertain me and maybe we will learn a thing or two about what the underlying thoughts and principles that drive us. You may be surprised. If I don't here from you I'll understand but at least I got this out of my system.

OK so here is my big question... Do you really think the senator will have any affect of keeping the beaches free of oil? Or are you implying we just stop all drilling and turn off all oil wells.. Please expand so I can understand your view point. If this is not what you meant I can only see your comment as flawed??

Have a good day,
Your soon to be conservative follower

Barbara Boxer has been a consistent leader in the effort to preserve the California coastline from offshore drilling.

Spot on! Well said, and it needed to be said. It's easy, even cowardly, to throw one's hands in the air and give up on the government. Sure, they lie and cheat. Sure the plight of the middle class grows ever more dire. But if we stop our efforts to hold them accountable, you can be D@MN sure that Big Business and the Wealthy and Powerful will step in to fill the void we leave behind. This is the burden we bear in with a representative government - that we must continually remind them of who they represent, and what we want them to be doing on our behalf.

Barney Frank said it point blank a few weeks ago: public outcry always trumps big money. There was not a shred of equivocation in his manner as he said it, and I took heart. Yes for representative government, with an active, engaged citizenry!

I did vote in the primary and I will vote in November. That being said, I still think that a politician is a politician, regardless of a D or R, or even an I, and any of them would sell-out to the highest bidder. I vote because it's my right and I agree, either put up or shut up. But that doesn't make me optimistic about my choices or the way our state or country is run.

No, I haven't. Although I did live in TX for a short time; does that count? Don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware of how lucky I am to have been born and raised in the US (by way of California). But that doesn't mean I think the state or federal politicians (always) make policy with their constituents in mind. And having to chose between Whitman and Brown is a case of "who sucks less."

I sleep well knowing Meg Whitman goes to bed furious. Furious that she has burned through nearly $120,000,000 just to be dead-even with someone who only started running a few days ago. I'm not the biggest Jerry Brown fan, but I need him to win by just ONE vote. She will be at $150,000,000 by November 2nd. On November 3rd, I want her to wake up and have that be the first number in her head.

Then she should leave the state.

It's hilarious that you blame California's problems on the Governor's office, when everyone already knows that California is ungovernable. The state legislature in Sacramento is dominated by Democrats, and they are the reason why America's most important state is also it's biggest laughingstock.

Go ahead and vote if being a gullible sheep makes you feel like you're making a difference. Last time I checked, Obama supported Bush's wars, Bush's bailouts, and even Bush's opposition to gay marriage.

There won't be a real change in this country until China stops lending us money, and Obama's destruction of the dollar will make that happen as much as anything, so by all mean, keep this Joker in the White House.

See ya at the revolution.

Great post, Anne! I'm gonna circulate it widely.

I cannot tell you how much it offends me that Meg Whitman, who didn't vote for 28 years, suddenly decides she's all civic-minded. She wants to run the state like a business and please her shareholders, when the running the state is to benefit the citizens of that state. She doesn't get it that making a profit is not what it's about. It's about the commonweal. The gall of that woman! Hnf!

Thanks for that! as bgofca notes below, the 2/3 majority needed to pass a budget is a major reason why California has been driven into a ditch. What the state desperately needs right now is someone who understands how to work *with* people to get things done in government, and for all the reasons you just cited and more, Meg Whitman is in no way capable of pulling this off.

Anne, The real solution is a constitutional convention, and removal of the amendment that allow a few signatures to get some radical, not-well-thought-out idea on the ballot every time some person doesn't like how an election turned out, (Gray Davis), so we end up with an 'action hero' or in Meggies' case a corporate shark, who OBVIOUSLY wants to be president ultimately. We have a mixed bag of ultra-viraes laws on the books, and tons of unfunded mandates. We NEED a NEW, REAL constitution that is principled, efficient, and all-encompassing of our citizens rights. AND we SERIOUSLY need APOLITICAL redistricting!

Just get out there and vote. I'm voting for the first time, and am proud to say its for the left side.

so you think they need a ceo who sent jobs to india and who didn't even bother to vote in 28 yrs???
the republican governors and the requirement of a 2/3 majority to pass any money bills or budget (which was put in by the republican gov reagan) is what has hurt california. having just suffering through a governorship of a person with no governing experience (isn't it funny how republican actors are worshiped as near gods in the rep. party, but a democratic actor is scorned as liberal hollywood??)
California definitely does not need outsource queen meg.

Americans have to improve their skill set, don't blame India. In many cases services from India help a USA small business (e.g., website development). A big per centage of the highly paid engineers and scientists in the USA are from overseas. You could ship them all back tomorrow but who would replace them: our millions of HS dropouts?

Do you think spending $110Million on a governorship is efficient? JB actually cares about California while Meg doesn't vote for most of her adult life - doesn't that tell you anything?
