Real Men Eat Plants!

Posted: 03/24/10 01:49 PM ET

Today's Boston Globe features an article about men who are vegans. Actually, make that "hegans." Yes that's right, we have a new vegan subcategory. Hegans are "real men" (whatever that's supposed to mean) who have adopted a vegan diet for health reasons. One recent convert gave credit to The China Study, and its research linking animal protein to the acceleration of the growth of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, for scaring him away from cheeseburgers. And he's now converted his wife and 8-year-old daughter (not the other way around for once).

Another health conscious guy featured in the article gave this choice quote: "Sure there is a stigma attached to it, that it's for yuppie, tree-hugging, emaciated weaklings. That is far from the truth. I like to say that real men eat plants." (Just wondering, what's so wrong with hugging trees anyway?).

Apparently there are no hard numbers on how many hegans exist because "by nature most men don't make their eating habits public." Except when they eat out at Candle Cafe, I guess.

A choice quote from the article that I can relate to (and I'm a "shegan," not a hegan) was this: "The thing I hear all the time is: 'Are you still on that diet?' It's the farthest thing from a diet. I don't feel limited at all. If anything, what I eat has expanded not contracted. I will never diet ever again."

"They are hegans. They are healthy. And they are here to stay." Well, macho grandstanding aside, I, for one, hope they do.

To summarize: whether you're a hegan or a shegan, together we are "wegan."

Other categories that may also apply to some vegans are "teegan"--tiny vegans--like Thom Yorke or "v-emo-gans" like Dashboard Confessional. Let the categorizing begin!

Amazing article..My hegan and I have been married for 41 years in June...
He can cook up a storm.. Since his retirement he has taken over my kitchen and I support him all the way. I keep telling him he should put together a Cookbook..
Thank you so much for this great article!!!

So glad to finally be able to admit it, even my Teamster co-workers are moderately accepting these days. Gone are the days where others would taunt me with their Bacon Breath and their Bulbous Bellies.
Great article Anne, thanks !!!

Call them what you will, men who don't eat meat are sexier simply because there is clearly some synapses firing up there--evident in that they are grasping at least one of the many reasons to cut out animal products. Cutting out meat & dairy for ethical reasons is what it's about, though--like my keeper-of-a-husband!

Great article!

Did you see the Jamie Oliver Food Revolution the other night? That jerk DJ made this comment like, "Are we supposed to sit around and eat lettuce all day?" My husband and I were wondering when lettuce became gender-specific...as in, "real men don't eat lettuce!" What in the world is that about?!?!

Bethab,
I didn't see the show but am not surprised that there was resistance to the "Food Revolution" that Jamie Oliver is attempting to unleash on the local community. Personally, I lean more towards John Robbins' vision for a Food Revolution: http://www.foodrevolution.org/
The best part of the "hegan" article (other than providing the term "hegan" for the amusement of all) was that it featured men who are wholeheartedly down with eating plants. And by including athletes and a veteran firefighter in the article, the point was pretty obvious that they are in fact "real men" (who eat lettuce!).

Glad it is becoming socially acceptable for both genders to eat better - yet wondering why our expectations are continually broken out by gender. Then again, that Equal Rights Amendment for women never did pass!

I find it interesting that they classify being a thin young treehugger to be an insult and that it's preferable to be a fat old sexist. Maybe women prefer real men like that! :) But I too think that silly labels people give themselves are fine, as long as we all agree to be limit our cruelty to teasing rather than factory farms. :)
