Cosmological Constant

Amy Tan (the famous author, yes) speaks of what she calls, 'the cosmological constant" -- that something we call luck, coincidence, the mystery of chance, serendipity, etc.

We have all felt it and wondered where it comes from. It could be the friend that calls when you think of her, the highway billboard that speaks directly to you, the perfect timing of an event in your life, the gut feeling that turns out to be spot on, meeting someone in a random airport or place you never visit, and so on.

I love this stuff. I see it in my life everyday and I actually expect it to show up. When moments like this happen, it's a sign that I am going in the right direction with life and not fighting against it. I call it the language of life--it's the language that many of us haven't yet learned, not one of words, but of things happening on an invisible plane.

Even if you think this is all ridiculous and for spiritual freaks, I encourage you to be open, to tune your antenna for a few days, be like a detective looking for these signs and coincidences. They're there to serve you.

Fish need water to breathe, and guess where fish live? In water!

Plants need sun to grow, and guess where you find plants growing? In sunlight!

Miracles all. Or maybe just the way the world works.

SpeedBumps' analysis is dead on. You find miracles because you WANT to. Imagine you are waiting for a bus, but at the last minute you decide not to take it. The bus then pulls away and proceeds down the street without incident. Was it a miracle that you didn't get on? What if your dream mate happened to be on that bus with an empty seat next to them?

Ah, you say, but what if the bus pulls away and is plowed into by a tractor-trailer, killing everyone on board. Well, bully for you, but what about all the poor saps that didn't hear the cosmic warning bells and got on anyway? What miracle did they experience? Burning death, apparently.

This is the kind of thinking that leads to problem gambling and belief in god.

We are of this universe, and as SpeedBumps pointed out, we are programmed to look for patterns. So guess what? We find patterns in our universe! Your wonderment in this case is a twist on the old canard that god must exist because the universe seems so ordered and beautiful. Well, of course it does - to beings who have evolved in it.

We seek meaning in meaningless phenomena because assigning meaning to things is a human trait.

Sorry Lass, you've been sucker punched by your own humanity. One of the hallmarks of the human race is our penchant for pattern recognition. Eons of evolution have hard-wired us to see that tiger hiding in the tall grass. We are so good at seeing patterns, that we see them where there are, in fact, none. We see faces in the static on a TV screen, elephants and bunnys in the shape of the clouds, conspiracies in the laughter of our friends and nation-wide victory in the vote of one state.

Thanks for the friendly reminder. On busy days that turn into weeks, then months, and years, it is easy to forget the magic of life.
I'll take reminders as often as I can get them.
For now, I'm off to work...who knows what the day may bring!!

How about the reverse?
Everytime I'm about to have a success, the phone rings and it's my mother. She starts nagging, and I can feel everything positive around me disappear.
Needless to say, whatever it was I was working on falls apart.
That's a constant.

My suggestion is to either get caller id or don't answer the phone!! Sounds like your a glutton for punishment!!
Perhaps you were "meant" to hear this advice...
