Kathryn Ireland, fellow HP blogger, was the seventh mother -- of boys, as it happens -- who mentioned to me today the New York Times Magazine cover story by Cynthia Gorney on mothers who have sons fighting in Iraq:

The mother of a 22-year-old son, Gorney says that she was drawn to this story precisely because she sometimes feels so
personally removed from the conflict in Iraq. "I know too many
people, and I put my own family in this category," she says, "who
don't really know what it feels like to have a personal stake in this
conflictā€”to be experiencing this military engagement not as an
abstract political issue, not as a matter of partisan politics, but
as the most urgent and important thing that's going on daily in your
life."
