Bill Frist may be a lousy Senate Majority Leader, but it seems that we’re all better off that he left medicine. Frist likes to make a big deal out of the fact that he’s a doctor. The moniker “M.D.” appears three times on the front of his homepage, and “Dr.” appears five times on his bio page.

But if he tries to diagnose you, I recommend you get a second opinion. After reviewing video footage of Terri Schiavo in March, Frist said: “She certainly seems to respond to visual stimuli”.

However, after conducting an autopsy on Schiavo, a medical examiner said that her brain was “profoundly damaged,” that the damage was “irreversible”, and that “the visual centers of her brain were dead”.

Of course, this poor quack didn’t have the benefit of examining Schiavo via video -- he had to do it in person.

All indications are that Frist is planning to run for president in 2008. His best slogan might well be: “Send Me to the White House -- or I’m Going Back to Medicine.”

Update 6/16: On the Today Show this morning, Matt Lauer asked Frist if he was wrong in his "diagnosis" that Schiavo "does respond" in the video he watched. Frist laughably insisted that he had never given a diagnosis.
