Sunday Roundup

Posted: 04/15/2012 12:00 am

This week, North Korea suffered a major embarrassment when its missile test demonstrated how far the country has advanced in producing a weapon of mass dysfunction. On the campaign trail, Rick Santorum announced he was suspending his run for the White House, thereby avoiding what was shaping up to be an embarrassing primary trouncing in his home state. In dropping out of the race, Santorum said, "We were winning in a very different way." You mean by losing? That is very different. In Florida, the man who killed Trayvon Martin was finally arrested and charged with second-degree murder -- yet another example of what is possible when people come together in a social movement to force an unresponsive system to act. And in Massachusetts, the state marked another year of its health care system. Happy 6th birthday, Romneycare! So sorry your father abandoned you. Let's hope your national cousin doesn't get the same shoddy treatment.

Arianna, it's my fervent hope that, among many other great deeds, you would serve the 21st century role that Walter Cronkite did in past few decades in media credibility and moving force. In particular, LBJ said: "If I've lost Walter Cronkite (on Vietnam), I've lost the war." (my paraphrase) In metaphor as well as political reality, LBJ was accurate in his statement.

Wouldn't it be the height of accolade if President Obama would at some point in the near future utter similar words and acknowledgement, if you were to issue a frontal unequivocal pronouncement of the whole truth about America's tragic long Afghan War going on 10 years ! The latest Afghan co-ordinated offensive reminiscent of the "Vietnam Tet Offensive" is the triggering event and watershed moment in the 10 year long America's war on Afghanistan.

Here's my comment on the "MINI TET OFFENSIVE, AFGHAN STYLE":--

When the Amish learn one day that Santorum dropped out of the race they will be very disappointed.

Arianna -- I have read your columns for years, and listened to the voice that was among the few progressive talking back in the Bush days, about a different way of governing.
But, I've never seen such a snarky post!
Funny. Very funny stuff!

I liked particularly the Santorum send-up, when he said he was "Winning in a different way."
Losing is a very different way of winning, indeed!

A pleasure today.
thanks.

We have Stalinist Show Trail in Sanford and the Red Queen is yelling punishment now and verdict later.

What Stalin has to do with Sanford's problems is hardly identifiable.
But the Red Queen is just offensive, when used in league with a Stalin reference.

You can't say that we weren't warned:

Thomas Jefferson: “Progressive taxes are required to prevent a permanent rich aristocracy that then buys government and ends democracy as happened in England ”

I hadn't heard that Sanitorium quote, Arianna. LOL. "...winning in a very different way." Yeah, the same, but different. I guess that's what we could really call a "spin". Not exactly a Gordian knot, more like a slip knot.

North Korea is positioned to benefit from the rise of China. As China's wages rise, they can shift some production to North Korea. Win/Win.

Yeah, if by "North Korea" you mean the dictators and exclude everybody else. They currently export their people as slave laborers so they have hard currency to pay for their imports of luxury cars, liquors, etc. The regime gets the pay, not the people that actually do the work.

>North Korea suffered a major embarrassment when its missile test demonstrated how far the country has advanced in producing a weapon of mass dysfunction.<

Not that I have shed any tears (I was actually laughing heartlessly) about this failed launch, be careful what you write about this and an earlier technology (aircraft), or an even older one (ships). All space faring nations had launch failures at various stages recently.
The probability of a failure is the highest probability of the failure of any component in the system. A malfunctioning ball bearing in a fuel pump for instance can doom a launch. Same failure in an oil pressure pump of a ships engine can lead to the loss of power of the ship and consequently to the loss of the ship.
If on the other hand North Korea was only and only was interested in getting it's own weather satellite into orbit they could have asked their protectors to do it for them.

A view from across the pond : Yes indeed Arianna people power can make things better for all, I still remember the 2008 chant of President Obama "YES WE CAN" it is taken a little longer that some people had hoped for, but when you know what the President inherited from 8 years of his predecessor it can hardly be a surprise. Things are looking up, and people have very short memories when it fits their warped agenda as an example gas pump price were $4.25 under the last Bush administration.
Keep fighting for EQUALITY for EVERYONE not just the 1%. TEAM OBAMA 2012 !!!!!

I am with you. President Obama has accomplished a great deal in less than 4 years beginning with his first four days when he signed into law equal pay for equal work for Women. Over 40 presidents never considered that important enough to bother with. And considering that over half of Washington have publicly stated that they would do ANYTHING possible to prevent that Black Man from living in what they believe is "their White House" for four more years, I think he has done a heck of Job. Just think about what he could do with a majority in Congress. Fire the GOPers, send scalia and his little gang of traitors to Gitmo, and make a simple majority enough to pass a Bill in the Senate. It would be nice to have a Government that was beneficial to the other 99%. 1%er's and Big Corporate, YOU'RE FIRED!!!.

x2.
The stakes couldn't be any higher, as regressive policies will just mean we'll have to rebuild all over again, with less resources than now, since they've spent so many of them on billionaire tax breaks, and unsubstantiated war causes.
