Sunday Roundup

Posted: 06/03/2012 12:00 pm

This week, a federal appeals court found the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, another step on the inevitable, though sometimes rocky path toward making America a more perfect union. Mitt Romney clinched the GOP nomination, then spent the week with the Barnum and Birther Circus, his turn in the center ring upstaged by lead clown Donald Trump. And in North Carolina, a jury refused to convict John Edwards of violating campaign finance laws. As the Justice Department decides whether to retry him, perhaps the administration should consider taking the resources it was wasting investigating how Bunny Mellon spent her money and redirect them toward prosecuting those who caused the financial crisis. They should care far less about how Edwards financed his affair and far more about how the rest of us got screwed.

If "less is more", is more worth less?

Old Democracy is being bought and sold far too easily.! Justice is also a prisoner, - of the super rich and the elite.! Is it time for a new, improved/product? A better defensible Democracy? For one and ALL?
We also need a new President.! No, not Romney. A President who is also a HERO.!
We also need a new Congress,
We also need a new Senate,
We also need a new, brave, Attorney General,
We also need a new Supreme Court,
We also need......
We also need, Jack Kennedy. And Robert Kennedy.!!!

A President who is also a HERO.!

Please define "hero,"
and who would that be in today's world?

What? No dictionary nearby?
Hero: A Woman of distinguished courage and ability, admired for her brave deeds and noble qualities. Practically fearless. Daily doing battle, for Truth and Justice.! A rare bird.!
Sounds like... Arianna.!

We all (most of us) created the financial crisis. Overbought, over leveraged, under saved and under thought. We had a lot of help along the way. Have we learned yet? Time will tell.
08:52 PM on 06/03/2012
I thought about it....and you have a point that many are responsible,
but there are degrees...at one end of the spectrum we have some people who don't make enough to save......clear over to the other end of responsibility....of those who knew they were manipulating the system, that it could all hit the fan, and didn't care as long as they "made theirs."

The guilt-trip belongs to the guilty.

You're on target again, Arianna. In the list of Department of Justice 'shoulds' - We the People should see some sign there are NOT two separate and distinct 'Rules of Law' in OUR country. Instead, the message seems undeniable there's a conditional Rule of Law for the wealthy and powerful, and another one that's actually 'enforced'.

Politician's are difficult to prosecute, for perjury, voter fraud ,misuse of funds or any criminal activity. It would be nice to see those that put our nation in such troubled times prosecuted, but the main players( Summers and Geithner are still in control).Mozilo was acquited and Johnson and O'Neil are safe , and Stanford was convicted. The Nafta authors are safe as we expand trade treatys: BHO has even made it possible for Russia to join the WTO in 2014.What is really scary is that the BRIC nations that were booming are now slowing way down.Chicken Little may have been right.

I agree. However, let's be clear; the Prosecutor in the Edwards case was a rogue Republican intent on smearing the Democratic Party.

Other than that - A.H. we need to hear your voice more often. The Post has lost its original vision as a Progressive forum to move this country forward. We do not need these heavy handed tabloid style headlines. There is to much at stake; real issues need to be covered and discussed to help people make informed decisions.

"Blue dress" case cost us millions, now this one - is anyone oversees expenditures of Justice Dep? Did anyone ever was hold financially responsible for wasting people money for their own carrier/ political goals?
03:18 PM on 06/03/2012
All of that money could have been saved if Clinton had simply told the truth.
04:00 PM on 06/03/2012
probably not. they would have went on to look for something else on him. they were after him from the get go and eventually found "something".

Yeah...and what about all the money wasted on "Whitewater?" Clinton's behavior was inexcusable, but it was not directly related to his job performance. It was a personal indiscretion which most people would feel perfectly justified in lying about publicly. The fall-outs from the Clinton witch hunts were far more damaging to the public than anything they did.
