Sunday Roundup

Some post-Inauguration predictions:

Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma will refuse all future cold-weather bookings.

Aretha Franklin will now be known as "The Queen of Soul...and Funky Hats."

Rev. Lowery will be invited to throw out the first pitch at the home openers of the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians.

Jacques Chirac will not be renting Cujo anytime soon.

George Bush will not be on Scooter Libby's Christmas card list this year.

In the Dick-Cheney-in-a-wheelchair-movie-reference-derby, "Mr. Potter" will beat out "Ernst Stavro Blofeld."

The swearing in will not be the last time President Obama and Chief Justice Roberts are not on the same page.

1. It turns out Cheney didn't hurt his back moving boxes. He just spent waaay too many hours bending over the shredder the night before.

2. As a well paid, non-homeowner, my tax payments are higher than most of my co-workers. Back when one of our governors was making hay over "welfare queens," I made a deal with my "riled up" co-workers. I told them that I would "apply" my tax payments to welfare recipients, taking a chance some of my hard-earned money would go to "welfare queens." As a result, their tax payments would have to go for the bombs, as my money was already spoken for. As some of them attempted to protest that they didn't want to pay for bombs, I said it was too late, I'd already spoken for the welfare recipients, and they were out of luck. I also pointed out it was pointless for them to continue complaining about something I was "paying for," but that I might have a word or two to say about what they were paying for. There were fewer complaints in the lunch room after that.

Arianna,
As usual, I love your post.
Your thoughts are right on, w/ your sense of humor showing through. Thanks so much, and keep up the good work.

We watched the Inauguration at work and when people saw Cheney being wheeled out, there were jokes that referenced that scene in "Naked Gun 2-1/2" where someone (forget who -- Leslie Neilson, OJ Simpson?) pushes a person in a wheelchair down the steps of a stadium (when I say "pushes" I mean, like, so the wheelchair is on its own). Some wishful thinking going on there....

In the popular 1999 film "The Matrix", Morpheus presents Neo with a choice; the truth or the status quo.

"You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed, and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you just how deep the rabbit hole goes."

Frankly, I think this is Obama's "Red Pill" moment. The USA is insolvent. Period. Build a bridge and get over it. We have grown drunk on debt and greed, and as with any twelve step program, the first step is to acknowledge the severity of the problem. In the words of Christ, "the truth will set us free".

The root cause of this has been eight years of wreckless spending in a massive overreaction to 3000 deaths. Add this on top of a warped accounting process that permits the Federal government to lend to itself to cover social security liabilities, the demise of national savings, and an entire Boomer generation unprepared for retirement and you have a toxic mix of fear, greed, denial and lies.

So what's it going to be, the blue pill or the red pill?

Can we support a President who is 100% honest with us?

Yes we can.

Good afternoon Arianna,
Regarding President Obama and Chief Justice Roberts not being on the same page....
A second glance reveals the following...
Both are considered to be constitutional experts.
Each has the constitutional expertise to do the others' job.
Conclusion...
Imagine the roles reversed.
President Roberts?
Chief Justice Obama?
Would the nation be better off in the long run?
Have a great day everyone.

There will be a huge increase in marital discord as wives complain to their husbands, "Why don't you ever look at me in the same way as Barack looks at Michelle?"

Public display of affection does not always translate to private display of affection. I always knew how to turn it on in public but my husband and I fought like cats and dogs behind close door. We are now divorce with no regrets.

Sounds like my second marriage (which ended in similar fashion). Let's hope the Obamas do not meet that fate. Their affection certainly seems genuine. I mean, the guy freaking DOTES on her (not that I blame him!)

Since Geron Corp. (NASDAQ--GERN) got the go-ahead from the FDA to, FINALLY, use embryonic stem cell therapy, all people who have been suffering from diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and especially from spinal cord injuries, will get the opportunity--after Geron proves its case studies when paraplegics walk away from the hospital--to bring Class Action and Criminal lawsuits against anybody involved with the executive order that cut federal funding for stem cell research. The repercussions of these justifiable lawsuits will bring both financial justice and prison terms--incarcerations that will extend far beyond the reaches of an Administration who cruelly and unjustly forced people to unnecessarily remain in their wheelchairs and beds for eight long years; those sentences and fines will even include those who had nothing to do with cutting the funding, but simply agreed with, on some unfounded moral ground, with the Bush Administration's stance on stem cell research.

In 1888, one of my favorite thinkers wrote, "The newspaper reader says: this party destroys itself by making such and such mistakes. My HIGHER politics says: a party which makes such mistakes has already reached its end; it has lost its sureness of instinct...one could almost define what is bad in this way."

Peace and Be Well.

What else could we predict from the inauguration?

The J Crew website will continue to crash from the huge number of people trying to buy Obama clothing ... but I just checked and it's not for sale.

White will be the colour to wear to weddings again ... for honoured guests not necessarily the bride.

The sale of dictionaries (online and hard copy) will go up as once again folks are required to understand words of more than one syllable spoken by the President.

Just a few thoughts.

I kept seeing references to Michelle Obama buying her clothes from J. Crew, so I took a look at their Web site and thought, yup, I can see how that is definitely her style....

I thought being Chief Justice of the Supreme Court involved reading!!! Or, maybe, Chief Justice Roberts brain went into brainfreeze after he ottered the name "Hussein" and he could not recover the coordination between brain, eyes and mouth soon enough to read the rest of the oath properly! I think also forgot to break the oath up into easily recitable chunks for the President to be to repeat!

Oh, maybe that was it. I was thinking it was possibly because Roberts was (consciously or unconsciously) getting even with Obama for voting against his confirmation as Chief Justice....

Heh. Roberts' flub doesn't bode well does it? (Although he did apologize for it to Obama, apparently, when they redid the oath.)

Her intellect is quite sexy huh?
Interesting that you would say "I am a conservative but..."
I think she used to be a Republican. I think the problem for her is that most republicans don't uphold the values of "conservatism" anymore and haven't for sometime. Reagan and both Bush's spent money with absolute wild abandon. What's more is they showed very little concern for our most precious values. I'll let you try to figure out what those values are.

I applaud the trend toward advertising that recognizes the financial constraints some people are feeling. This morning I saw a Little Caesar's ad for a pizza to feed a family for $5.00. Nissan has advertised its Versa for under $10K (that's no frills, of course). Thrift is a virtue, and bling is tacky.
