Sunday Roundup

When given the choice between having Barack Obama reach across the aisle to work with the GOP or pursue the policies he advanced during his campaign, a significant majority of Americans want him to stick to his guns (56 percent to 39 percent). And 79 percent of the public wants Republicans to drop the partisanship and work with Obama. No wonder Obama seems to be driving Republicans over the edge, with Tom DeLay calling the president's address to Congress "insane," John Bolton cracking jokes about the nuclear annihilation of Chicago, and Bobby Jindal using his time in the spotlight to rave -- inaccurately -- about wasteful "volcano monitoring" programs. You know times are tough for Republicans when the highlight of CPAC is a two-minute speech delivered by a 13-year old.

I'm beginning to sound like a broken record but we have to stop allowing the cons to assert that their principles are dedicated to fiscal responsibility (small spending) and they just strayed for a while. This bunch had their own way under 43 and spent, spent, spent. For the last 6 out of 8 (and maybe even the last 2 years) they did exactly what they wanted with no restraint. They didn't mind saddling future generations with crushing debt - they were happy to do it as long as the dollars went to welfare for the wealthy, 43's wars and anything to enrich big business (who returned the favor with financial support). Their problem with Pres. O's budget is how the money is to be allocated, not that money is being allocated. We are what we do, not what we claim we do. Fiscal responsibility as a core con principle is a myth, a lie.

You just keep on keeping on....
Everything....about the republican party is a lie. Their sole interest are the rich and to make them richer...their sole mission is to con the middle class and the poor into voting against their own interests. To think of ways of rallying them ..to unite them and to keep them coming back for more.
What blows the mind is that so many follow blindly...no matter what they see happening.

There are so many Republicans jocking for a leadership role in the party you need a score card to keep up. I would say the thirteen year old was possible the leader who is the brightest. I would say the bottom of the barrel was Newt, Hot tub DeLay and Bolton they are the cause of the problems we have to try to solve. I don't think the Louisiana flash is a lot of help either I would say Oxford is not what it used to be.

I think Obama needs to get tough....he gave the Republicans ample opportunity to show bipartisanship and all they smell is weakness and blood. The Republicans continue to prove that they "don't have enough sense to pour piss out of a boot with the instructions on the heel" (as my grandad likes to say).

Obama is trying to work with a group of people who thought Sarah Palin was smart enough to be second in command to who would be the oldest President in history..... He's giving them WAY TOO MUCH CREDIT.

Get tough Obama. America elected YOU.

As the great Chinese general, Sun Tzu, said, "If you know your enemy and you know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles." After reading the comments to this post and so many on the Huff Post may I humbly submit that our enemy here in America is not each other? Is this too radical a statement? Our great experiment of a nation is threatened from without and within, so rather than be divided and conquered by...take your pick, can't we agree to assume that those fellow citizens who disagree with us may, just may actually believe what they are saying from the bottom of their heart and not the bottom of Hell? Our great country is still great and that is because of we, the people. The Huff Post is poised to become the nucleus for a third party, I sincerely believe that, but that can only happen if ALL Americans are welcomed and respected. Please, everyone, stop this puerile and off-putting tendency to state that you see in "Republicans" and "The Right" and "Conservatives" and others only the most venal of motives and the lowest of IQ's. You know in your heart that it isn't true for many of the 50+ million people who didn't vote for Obama; they believe what they believe and should be respected for it. We're all in this threatened boat called America so let's pull together before we pull apart.

So what you mean is we should be nice to people who want our country to fail? I think not. If the 50 million who did not vote for Obama want a seat at the table, then they need to remove themselves from the GOP and find a voice and offer solutions. Failure to do that, and calling yourself a Republican, means you support the party and it's failing policies. These same people voted for Bush and refuse to admit they were wrong or had any part in this. Guess what? You can change parties!

I think Obama is doing the right thing by reaching out to Republicans. For years, Obama has talked and written about the poisonous battles of Democrat versus Republican. I must say that the current Republicans are an especially crazy group, but Democrats have also been overly partisan. Plenty of Democrats wanted Bush to fail in many ways; of course, Bush managed to epic fail beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Obama really wants to tone down the partisan wars, and he has a chance to make some headway here, especially since the "split" now seems to be between a 70% mainstream and a 30% radical lunatic Republican fringe. Obama has got to keep appealing to that 70%, and try to grow it to 75% or 80%. I know the Democrats are on top now, and I'm happy for that, but let's not underestimate the damage the 30% Republicans can do. Look at how the fiscal stimulus got partially gutted. Let's not declare "Mission Accomplished" just yet.
08:35 PM on 03/01/2009
Americans should hope the Republicans stop the Democrats from ramming the FY 2010 Federal Budget through...The sheer size of the budget should make us all stop and consider where we are in the economy and how this huge debt will be repaid. Given the size of the borrowing that will be needed to support the budget and national debt we already have, we need to adjust this coming budget and only accept the items that are needed. So, don't make the Republicans sound like they are not needed. You may need them more than ever this year.
09:10 PM on 03/01/2009
No, we don't. Not this brand of Republican. There is nothing good or salvagable about this group. Don't delude yourself. It is good to have a strong, principled opposition with good ideas...lunatics who just stoke cacophany, dissent and hate while circle-jerking each other serve no useful purpose whatsoever. They do serve a very destructive one though.

FOX & Conservative Luminarios

FOX news on February 28, during the CPAC confrence called Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter the "luminarios of the Conservative Party."
I am almost without words. Almost. This is like announcing that boiled Spam will be served for Thanksgiving. No wonder nobody showed up. (last election) I seriously thought it was a joke, thought maybe the newscaster was just playing with me, but, nope, dead serious. Sorry, I didn't mean to insult the Spam.

The Republicans simply do not look serious and that's a problem when the country is in a very seriously mood. The Repubs got intellectually and organizationally soft during Bush Jr years, because of politics of war and bubble economy, that free political lunch is gone.

Now what is left of the right is kooky and getting kookier, Cantor, Bachman, Palin, Jindal, these are not the smart wizened fat cats of old, good luck with them. In Congress and Cali legislature, no Repub wanted to cross the aisle because whiny loud-mouths with radio shows.

Having said that, the country will swing back to some type of conservativism if the Dems don't deliver. There has been NONE, ZERO, NADA change from Bush to Obama in the most important issue of our times, the financial and real estate melt-down. Geitner, Sumner are way more of the same. Until Dems open their eyes to how the bloated FIRE sector has parasitcally taken over our country's economy and politics, their hope of making the economy better, improving social programs and income equity will have lno traction. The only difference between Obama and Bush financially is that while Bush saved rich peoples money with our national debt/interest, Obama gives some crumbs to regular people, through even more debt, after saving rich people. When someone of that group dares to screw with Wall Street as much as they have screwed twith taxpayers and workers, then, and only then I will know they are serious.

I have to agree with you there. There has not been a serious move on the part of this administration yet to deal with financial crisis of middle America. The focus is on saving these huge conglomerates with taxpayer money instead of saving the taxpayer- a group that is becoming smaller with every new batch of layoffs. I just don't believe that it is more important to save a failing business than a failing middle class. Giethner has been part of the very same Wall Street that set this crisis in motion, and appears to still have their interests at heart. Unfortunately, Obama is following his advice. The country cannot thrive until the housing mess is dealt with.

Pseudo religious groupies have been grabbing the top of the catch for years. But a new age has dawned. 65 million loners have elected the supreme outsider. The distribution of wealth will now be spread evenly among all deserving Americans. Atheists, gays, odd balls, and all life styles are welcome to share the goodies. Love is everywhere. Even God is sharing the sky with his Angels.

Yes Arianna.

I heard Tom Delay and his attacks of President Obama.

I was wondering myself about Bi-Partisanship as a goal,,, without understanding the true costs.

Umm? What I am running around in my thinking is that the present opposition is groundless,, as President Obama, or America, have not yet had the time to see if his policies will work.

My point of comparison would be the way in which Americans were once in support of the Bush White House perusing Bin Laden into Afghanistan. There was great support for these actions until removal of the Taliban Government, Interventionism and Nation Building became the obvious goal,, rather than finding ben Laden.

Yes, there were those who opposed all war,, on both sides,, but general support for Bush was high early on. It was when the deceptions rose to media dominance and public awareness, and the search for bin Laden abandoned, that Political opposition to the Bush administration began to climb. (Late 2002 to spring 2003.)

We saw on September 11, 2008 (WHPB), bin Laden is not even being accused as the Mastermind of 9/11. as we were once led to believe.

Financial types have been warning of “Predatory Lending” for years,, including Congress.

As far as Obama, the attacks seem to be against the MAN, racial fears and ideologically based.

Not even a 100 day honeymoon????

My gosh,, seems these attacks started November 5th, as if the election never happened.

All the best

Knute

Yep, to the attackers, it's as though the last 8 years never happened either.

Obama is doing quite well as far as I'm concerned but there is one glaring item that needs immediate attention but won't likely get mentioned. That is the loan sharking these financial institutions are doing through their credit cards. There should be legislation passed that no interest rates can exceed 5% on any loans or credit card balances of the banks prime rate.

It would be interesting to see a bill come up in Congress to accomplish this feat and then see what scatter brained rants the Republicans come up with to vote against the bill. Let them fillabuster as the more they are seen as obstructionists the better off the country will be in the long run.

I am waiting for some of these stories to be more about the details of some of these Democratic proposals, and less about Republicans and their shenanigans..

There are lots of ways to find out about the details of Obama's proposals. I have yet to see a real proposal from the Republicans that explains how tax cuts for the rich actually helps correct the economic situation. Seems to me the rich just buy big houses, fast FORIEGN cars, and art. They used to invest in American businesses but now they just stash their money overseas so they don't have to pay their share. Federal income or capital gains taxes are only a portion of the tax burden. State and local taxes (including income, gas, sales, etc, as well as all the taxes on utilities) take up a proportionally huge percentage of cash for the middle and working class.
