'David Bowie, Artist' At The Museum Of Arts And Design (PHOTOS)

Posted: 07/02/11 02:30 AM ET

Lady Gaga is certainly not the first spandex wearing pop star to fancy herself a performance-artist-cum-musician. Long before Mother Monster came Ziggy Stardust in a cloud of glitter, curve hugging bodysuits, and platform shoes.

Now, the sexually ambiguous space invader has his own retrospective at the Museum of Arts and Design. The show, evocatively titled "David Bowie, Artist," seeks to re-frame the glam rocker's artistic output as a lifelong performance piece of sorts. The museum's press release claims, "Bowie has crafted a powerful fusion of music, culture, and other performance practices -- one that has become the blueprint for contemporary artists working in performance."

The exhibition wants visitors to look beyond just his musical career to examine Bowie's "total artistic output" which means that his music videos, interviews, and concert footage will be on display, as well as a series of film screenings of Bowie's most notable film appearances, including Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, The Hunger, The Man Who Fell To Earth, The Labyrinth, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, Basquiat, and The Linguini Incident. (The only question is: who forgot to include Zoolander?)

While claiming Ziggy as a "blueprint for contemporary artists" may be a bit hyperbolic (I don't see him sitting for three months in the atrium of MoMA), his pop-cultural influence is undeniable (see here) and in recent years his cult following has seen a resurgence in the iTunes libraries and Hot Topic tees of a whole new generation. Plus, MAD has to do something to try to compete with the rock-star crowds for Alexander McQueen!

"David Bowie, Artist" will be on view until July 15, while a two-week run of "The Man Who Fell to Earth," begins at Film Forum June 24-July 7, in conjunction with the exhibition.

I , like most Bowie fans believe he has now retired.....
just like to point out that in Britain, unlike any other rock star he is almost worshipped.....
the ch-ch-ch changes were amazing, the new styles, new fashions always ahead, that was what made him so special......but what a legacy.....Glasgow greens `73......'a night of Wowie at the court of king Bowie"

One of the best live performances Ive ever seen, equipment failure had him suspended over the stage for longer than expected, he just kept singing. It was interesting that he kept changing band personnel and still maintained popularity. Evidently he was the show. Some albums were quite good, including the last one. Always loved the style of the lead guitar players he chose.

It is very disappointing and uncharacteristic that David let his career fizzle out like it did. It doesn't become the icon that he was. It's been 7 years since his last tour, which was one of the best of his career, and I have been to 19 different shows. I know he had to cut the last tour short due to heart problems, and I am sure he chooses for his wife and family, which is his right, but it is still disappointing. He's only 64! To see these kinds of retro-shows celebrating his past is just not fun. He could still be at the top of his trade. I feel like 7 years of his genius are missing!

The Lady Gaga reference was completely unnecessary. She doesn't deserve to have her name put next to David Bowie's.

It took balls for David Bowie to open the doors which he did. Lady Gaga has even bigger balls and will keep the light on for many to see.

what a strange collection of stuff (not, imho, indicative of the quality, scope, and originality of the artist's work) - even posting Bowie's album covers over the years would have been more illustrative of his many incarnations and styles. But lousy stills from video? nah.

Funny that museums have to resort to using celebrities to attract patrons. Bowie is no doubt a great musician but there is no evidence that his visual displays are anything special. Museums got very "market savvy" in the 60's as well; if anyone is interested, read a book called "The Art Crowd" and you may get some insight as to why smudges on canvasses are selling for the prices they are.

American museums have a very hard time staying afloat financially and don't get any financial assistance other than by private donations, selling memberships and putting together what they hope will be a blockbuster exhibit once in awhile attracting new members and people who might not ordinarily visit a museum. These exhibits usually are something relating to pop culture and yes even celebrity sometimes. Museums just have to be very creative with the ways they make money these days. To say that it's "funny the museums have to resort" to using celebrities to attract patrons is an arrogant statement. When did you last donate money or buy a museum membership? Your statement is also an insult and slam to Bowie's contribution to the world of entertainment and art. What have you done lately to make a positive impact on society or make a statement? Get involved in your community and do something positive to help a local museum raise money in order to stay open and thrive so your children have continued access to see and learn about things they might not otherwise get the chance to experience.

Been enjoying David Bowie's music since Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. To bad I live ~8 hours away from where this will be.

I really didn't care too much for the early Bowie, but after he put out Low, Heroes and Lodger I realized his genius. (Eno deserves equal credit for the sound of those albums, and there's another artist worthy of a retrospective.) Now I like all of the David Bowie transmutations.

There would have been no greatness without Eno and Ronson.
