Alan Murphy

NBC4 and Telemundo Washington's Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest Winner

Alan was born in Washington, DC, but has grown up in Silver Spring, MD where he attended Montgomery county public schools and benefited from some really great teachers and academic programs. Currently, Alan is a sophomore in the International Baccalaureate magnet program at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD. His main interests include school, travel, baseball, and music. Alan has been playing alto saxophone for 5 years and he performs with his high school jazz band. He also played baseball since the 4th grade and is currently playing baseball in the county league. In his spare time, he loves to play videos games, spend time with friends, check out social media sites, read a good book, and listen to music. Alan believes that learning should not just be limited to the classroom, and because he loves to travel, his goal is to visit and experience a different country each year. Alan is well on his way to being fluent in Spanish by the time he finishes high school, so he plans to focus on learning Japanese in the next few years. Alan considers himself fortunate to have such supportive parents, family members, and friends, because they helped create the environment to make it possible for him to achieve and succeed
