Alison Smith

Alison Smith studied French and Political Science at Wake Forest University, and she earned her MA and PhD at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She wrote a dissertation on the films of Luis Buñuel and maintains an interest in the literature, film and culture of Francophone countries and the Hispanic world. Alison has taught French, Spanish, English and Women’s and Gender Studies at several places, including Wake Forest University, The Citadel and the College of Charleston, where she also served as the Associate Director of Women’s and Gender Studies. Her academic research is highly interdisciplinary, exploring intersections between Women’s and Gender Studies, film, literature, pedagogy and pilgrimage. Alison is passionate about traveling and has directed study abroad programs to France, Spain, Austria, Germany and Italy. She also served as faculty advisor for Alternative Break experiences in Belize, Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica. Alison is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Languages at The Citadel and lives in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
