Charles Francis

President, Mattachine Society of Washington, D.C.

Charles Francis, a native of Texas, lives with his family in Washington, D.C. and Homer, Alaska. My passion is the rescue of "deleted" or sealed LGBT political history, a frontier of original archival research. We call it "archive activism". President of the new Mattachine Society of Washington, a historical society, dedicated to educating lawmakers and the legal community about the politics, the embedded animus and the government persecution of LGBT Americans. I was honored to have been a co-founder of the Kameny Papers Project, which conserved the papers and artifacts of gay civil rights pioneer Dr. Franklin E. Kameny and donated them to the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
