Chelsea Manning

Former U.S. Army intelligence analyst, military whistleblower and democracy advocate

Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning is a former U.S. Army intelligence analyst. In 2010 she disclosed classified military and diplomatic documents and videos to the press while explaining that she hoped to promote "debates, discussions and reforms" of U.S. foreign policy. In 2013 a military judge sentenced her to 35 years in prison for these unauthorized disclosures. She came out publicly as transgender on Aug. 22, 2013. Chelsea's legal appeals will touch on issues of freedom of information, overclassification, and unlawful pretrial punishment.
