Responsible Investment & New Economy Strategist

Dan Apfel is an experienced leader building power for a just and sustainable economy in the areas of responsible impact investment, finance and the new economy, and community economic development. Dan is a Senior Associate at the Croatan Institute and also an independent consultant to foundations and nonprofits. Previously Dan spent five years as the executive director of the Responsible Endowments Coalition, the leading voice for responsible investing in higher education, where he led a staff of five to support students, faculty, and administrators in advocating for and implementing responsible investment policies. Before becoming REC’s executive director, Apfel was a Program Officer at the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, where he worked with credit unions serving diverse low- and moderate-income communities around the country. He managed a coalition of 16 credit unions running free tax-preparation sites that filed over 3,500 returns for low-income people in 200 and co-administered the New York State Coalition of Community Development Financial Institutions. Dan’s work on responsible and impact investing has been covered in publications including the New York Times, the Financial Times, Bloomberg Businessweek, the Guardian, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Forbes, and Institutional Investor Magazine. Dan also serves on the boards of Alternatives Impact and Alternatives Fund, affiliates of Alternatives Federal Credit Union, one of the leading community development credit unions in the United States. In his free time, you’re likely to find him sailing on Cayuga Lake or cross country skiing on the trails in surrounding Tompkins County. Dan holds a Masters in Public Administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University and a B.A. in History from the University of Rochester.
