Dr. Jonathan Gibralter

President, Wells College

Dr. Jonathan C. Gibralter is the 19th president of Wells College, located in Aurora, New York.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton, a master’s from New York University and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University. He worked in the mental health field before entering higher education.

Dr. Gibralter’s leadership is marked by a deep understanding of the current climate for higher education and the undergraduate experience, a demonstrated commitment to student well-being and environmental sustainability, the creativity and courage to pursue innovative solutions, and financial acumen. A nationally-recognized “thought leader” on issues of sustainability as well as efforts to curb binge drinking and promote responsible behavior on college campuses, Dr. Gibralter is sought out by the media as an effective leader on these efforts, is a frequent contributor to professional journals and conferences, and has provided expert testimony for the Department of Education and Congress.

He is a charter signatory and a member of the 2011-2012 steering committee of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. He is addressing the issue of binge drinking through a community-based, multi-faceted approach. In September 2008, he was honored with the national Presidential Leadership Award for promoting a campus climate that de-emphasizes alcohol.
